The government has moved closer to opening more than 10,000 acres of land in Turkana and West Pokot counties for gold mining after Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho announced a mining licence application.
In Gazette Notice No. 15986, published under Section 34 of the Mining Act, Joho notified the public that the ministry had received an application for a mining licence covering 40.9324 square kilometres, equivalent to approximately 10,111 acres, across the two counties.
“PURSUANT to section 34 of the Mining Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs notifies receipt of an application for a mining licence from East Africa Northwest Mining Company Limited, the details of which are set out in the Schedule hereto,” read part of the notice issued by Joho.
The notice outlines the proposed mining area, identifies gold as the mineral being sought and provides details of the boundaries covered by the application.
However, the notice confirms receipt of an application and does not establish that the licence has been approved.
