Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan Abdi has ditched the Jubilee Party and joined former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Hassan was formally received into the party by Gachagua DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala at the DCP headquarters on Tuesday, August 25.
He was presented with a DCP cap, which he wore before a crowd gathered at the party headquarters.
DCP Secretary General John Methu also welcomed the Kamukunji lawmaker to the party.
Speaking after joining the party, Hassan said he was happy to join the Gachagua-led party.
The Kamukunji legislator described DCP as a party committed to advancing the country’s interests and championing change.
“I am happy to join the DCP because it is a party that wants what is best for the country and seeks to bring real change for Kenyans,” he said.
“The leader of this party is a patriot. Gachagua is a patriotic leader who loves his people and his country.”
Yusuf was elected Kamukunji MP for a fourth consecutive term in the 2022 General Election on a Jubilee Party ticket.
He garnered 34,264 votes, representing 56.23 per cent of the total votes cast, defeating UDA candidate Robow Hassan, who polled 22,644 votes.
Hassan had previously won the Kamukunji seat on a PNU ticket in 2011, before switching to The National Alliance (TNA) in 2013 and Jubilee in 2017.
His move to DCP comes weeks after Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha also defected to the DCP party.
Governor Badilisha was formally received into DCP on Wednesday, July 29, by Gachagua during a consultation forum in Wamunyoro.
On July 24, Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata also joined the DCP Party and dumped the ruling UDA Party.

With just over a year to the 2027 General Election, Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of political defections from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Since launching the party in May 2025, Gachagua has attracted several high-profile politicians, including governors, former Cabinet secretaries, former senior UDA officials and former legislators.
At the same time, several sitting senators and Members of Parliament elected on UDA tickets have publicly aligned themselves with DCP.
Former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi resigned from UDA after accusing the ruling party of abandoning the ideals on which it was founded.
He later joined DCP, where he currently serves as the party’s National Organizing Secretary. Gachagua has also unveiled him as DCP’s preferred candidate for the Meru gubernatorial race in 2027.
Former nominated Senator Millicent Omanga officially resigned from UDA and joined DCP in March 2026.
She was received by Gachagua at the party headquarters before announcing that she would contest the Nairobi Woman Representative seat on a DCP ticket in the 2027 General Election.
