Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu and former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara have met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri. This has raised questions about whether the two politicians have decided to ditch Jubilee Party and join Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Gachagua said the two were cousins and that, after exchanging family pleasantries, they discussed what he described as the journey to “liberate” Kenya and the formation of the 6th administration, and that the consultations would continue.
“After family pleasantries, we consulted on the journey to liberate our country, Kenya, and the formation of the 6th administration. Consultations Continue,” said Gachagua.
Gachagua’s DCP seeks to expand its political base, while several politicians associated with Jubilee and other parties, including UDA, have moved into his camp.
Machogu’s Kisii Governor Bid
Machogu has already declared his intention to contest the Kisii gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections.
He made his bid public in January 2026, setting up a repeat of the contest when he entered in 2022, but lost to Governor Simba Arati.
Machogu has not been seen campaigning aggressively with recent polls showing Simba Arati likely to comfortably defend his seat.

Gachagua’s DCP Gains From Jubilee
The engagement comes against a backdrop of political movement from Jubilee to Gachagua’s DCP as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 polls.
On August 5, Joel Maina Kairu, a Jubilee gubernatorial aspirant for Nakuru County, led several Jubilee leaders into DCP.
After Gachagua’s Narok tour, he mobilized several aspirants and leaders, with 10 more UDA and ODM elected leaders joining DCP.
In February, former Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo joined the former deputy president’s camp, describing the decision as part of wider political realignments ahead of the 2027 election.
Gachagua has meanwhile been actively preparing DCP for the elections. In March, he met 134 DCP aspirants from Kirinyaga County at Wamunyoro and said the party would conduct nominations based on its membership register.

Ezekiel Machogu said the engagement was part of wider efforts to unite Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Machogu said he attended the courtesy breakfast meeting together with former South Mugirango MP Omingo Magara at the instructions of Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i.
According to Machogu, the discussions with Gachagua centered on the need for opposition parties and leaders to work together rather than pursue separate political interests.
He said the 2027 political journey should be guided by unity, inclusivity and accountability, while putting the interests of Kenyans ahead of individual ambitions.
“At the instructions of the Jubilee presidential candidate, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, together with Hon. Omingo Magara, we had the honor of attending a courtesy breakfast meeting with the DCP Party Leader, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, at his Wamunyoro home. Our discussions centered on the need for unity within the opposition and the importance of putting the interests of Kenyans above individual political ambitions,” said Machogu.
