Different ranks in the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are distinguished by badges of honour, often featuring star epaulettes.
Recently, the Kenya Air Force and the Kenya Army officers under KDF were seen wearing their new badges on their uniforms.
Under the newly introduced badges, the insignia of honour and rank features different symbols, including star epaulettes.
However, it should be noted that KDF has only one four-star General, the Chief of the Defence Forces.
Here is the comparison between the old and new:
| Rank | Old Insignia | New Insignia |
|---|---|---|
| Brigadier | Three rhombus shapes+ Coat of Arms | Coat of Arms + One star + Crossed swords |
| Major General | Crossed swords + One rhombus shape | Crossed swords + Two stars + Coat of Arms |
| Lieutenant General | Crossed swords + Coat of Arms | Crossed swords + Three stars + Coat of Arms |
| General | Crossed swords + One rhombus shape+ Coat of Arms | Crossed swords + Four stars + Coat of Arms |
The Kenya Navy has also introduced golden gorgets for its senior officers.
Previously, only the Army and the Air Force used gorgets for senior officers, with the thickness of the central strip, commonly referred to as “pili-pili”, indicating seniority and higher rank.

About KDF Commissioned Ranks
The KDF ranking system is dependent on a soldier’s level of expertise, responsibility, and authority.
Each level of leadership plays a vital role in the total KDF mission.
The military ranks have adopted a distinct two-tier system of Officers and Service Members.
The lowest rank among officers is that of a Second Lieutenant (2Lt), attained upon commissioning from the Kenya Military Academy, while the highest rank is that of a General, a four-star rank.

Non-Commissioned Ranks
The non-commissioned cadre of KDF personnel ranges from the junior rank of Private, attained after completing training at the Recruits Training School, to the senior rank of Warrant Officer Class One.
Warrant Officers wearing combat or working dress display their rank on the right wrist, while other Service Members display their ranks on the right arm of the uniform.
Soldiers at the rank of Private do not wear any insignia until they are promoted to Corporal.
Promotion within this cadre, like in the officers’ cadre, is based on performance, discipline, completion of career courses, integrity, and seniority in service.
Service Members holding the substantive rank of Sergeant, with specialized skills or trade experience and at least 10 years of service, may apply to join the officers’ cadre.
Upon their commanding officer’s recommendation, successful candidates undergo training and are commissioned as Special Duty Officers (SDOs) as provided under the KDF Act.
