The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has announced a temporary shutdown of its Nairobi and regional distribution centers.
In a notice dated June 17, 2025, the authority stated that the disruption would take place from July 1 to July 4.
“We wish to notify our esteemed customers and the general public that we shall close our Nairobi and Regional Distribution Centers for the annual stock-take effective Tuesday, 1 to Friday, 4th July 2025,” read part of the notice.
According to the authority, the closure will affect the receipt and dispatch of medical supplies, which will be suspended during the stock-taking period.

Additionally, the authority stated that only emergency cases will be attended to during the closure period.
They also informed the public that normal distribution operations will resume on 7th July 2025.

Stock Taking Process
KEMSA will undertake a semi-annual stock take, which is part of its broader strategy to ensure that every item is properly accounted for.
Taking stock is instrumental in planning to guarantee that the supply chain remains on course.
The annual stock-taking exercise is intended to uphold transparency and ensure accountability in the handling of medical supplies.

Distribution & Supply
KEMSA has a logistics network for the distribution of HPTS to Health facilities in the entire 47 counties. The core mandate is to ensure that the last-mile delivery of HPTs is done to the doorstep of every facility.
The distribution model traverses the borders on special request by the MoH to the neighbouring countries, that is, Tanzania, and South Sudan, among others.
They serve over 10,000 facilities across the country categorized into Level 1-6 facilities, institutions and private facilities.
The state corporation, operating under the Ministry of Health, was established with the mandate to procure, warehouse, and distribute drugs and medical supplies for designated public health programs.
It also serves as the national strategic stock reserve and supports the implementation of essential health packages and the needs of national referral hospitals.
Moreover, they establish a network of storage, packaging and distribution facilities for the provision of drugs and medical supplies to health institutions.
