Kenya Airways (KQ), Kenya’s national carrier, will establish a secondary hub in Accra, Ghana, at Kenya’s request. Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Davis Chirchir stated he held talks with the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of President William Ruto.
Chirchir noted that the hub is in the spirit of enhancing people- to- people contacts and advancing commercial linkages to strengthen intra-African trade, as envisioned under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), headquartered in Accra.
“I requested Mahama for Kenya’s National Carrier, KQ to establish a secondary Hub in Accra, Ghana, to enhance connectivity to West Africa and the rest of the world,” Chirchir said.
He pointed out that Kenya Airways flies to Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d’ Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, and Cameroon.
Chirchir explained that the strategic hub would enhance Accra as a centre, fostering connectivity between West Africa and global markets.
Additionally, he mentioned it would promote trade, tourism, investment, and economic prosperity in Ghana and the Western Region.
What is a Secondary Hub?
An aviation dictionary defines a hub as an airport that serves as a central connecting point for flights to multiple destinations.
It is where passengers and cargo are transferred between different flights and destinations.
Hub airports typically have extensive facilities, including multiple runways, terminals, and various amenities to support the high volume of connecting flights.

How Kenya Airways Will Benefit
Further, it facilitates efficient air transportation and connectivity by consolidating passenger traffic from various origins and funneling them through a central location.
Hubs also allow airlines to offer more frequent flights to a greater number of destinations while reducing costs associated with operating multiple point- to- point flights.
They are primarily located in major cities and are often operated by large airlines with extensive route networks.
These airports are strategically selected by airlines to enhance connectivity, improve operations, and optimise route networks.

Kenya- Ghana Relationship
Chirchir noted that Kenya and Ghana share fraternal relations and continue to work closely to strengthen ties.
He reaffirmed Kenya’ s commitment to expanding relations and further deepening friendship and partnership with Ghana.
