The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued the July 2025 climate outlook, predicting the peak of the cold season across several regions.
According to a statement on July 1, Nairobi, the Central Highlands, and parts of the Rift Valley are expected to experience cool, cloudy days with occasional light rainfall throughout the month.
According to KMD, above-normal rainfall will be concentrated in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands west and east of the Rift Valley (including Nyandarua and Laikipia), the Central and Southern Rift Valley, and parts of Northwestern Kenya.
“Cool and cloudy conditions with intermittent light rains are expected to dominate Nairobi, Central Highlands, and parts of the Rift Valley during July, as the cold season peaks,” read part of the statement.
Fog, Drizzles to Affect Visibility and Flights
Fog, overcast skies, and drizzles are expected to reduce visibility, especially along the Kikuyu–Kinungi stretch.
Air operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport in Nairobi may also face disruptions.
“Transport services might be affected by poor visibility in fog-prone areas, with airport operations in Nairobi likely to experience delays,” the statement added.
At the same time, Kenya Met warned that daytime temperatures could fall below 20°C in highland regions, including Nairobi, while nighttime lows may drop to under 10°C.
Turkana and West Pokot counties are forecast to remain cooler than normal, despite most parts of the country experiencing generally warmer-than-usual conditions.
Dry Weather to Persist in Lowlands
Counties in the northeastern and southeastern lowlands including Mandera, Garissa, Kitui, and Makueni will remain mostly sunny and dry.
However, cloudiness and occasional light rain may be observed near elevated areas within these regions.

Rainfall in these areas will be minimal, and residents in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) have been urged to conserve water due to potential stress on water resources.
Likely Impacts Across Regions
“The weather forecast for July 2025 is based on regression of Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs), SST gradients and the expected evolution of global SST patterns as well as upper air circulation patterns over Western Kenya and the Coastal region,” stated Kenya Met.
KMD has also outlined several effects of the cold season. Western counties are expected to record favourable crop performance due to consistent rainfall.

The low temperatures may lead to an increase in respiratory illnesses. Residents of the listed areas have been asked to keep warm and ensure adequate home ventilation.
Motorists have been advised to drive carefully on foggy roads, while environmentalists are encouraged to take advantage of ideal tree planting conditions in the highlands.
