The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather update for the week of May 27 to June 2, warning of continued rainfall, scorching daytime heat in some regions, and a dip in night-time temperatures in others. According to the forecast by Kenya Met, rainfall is expected to persist across several regions, including the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, and Western Kenya.
Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert for possible disruptions caused by the wet conditions.
While rain continues in parts of the country, other regions will experience sweltering daytime temperatures.
Kenya Met Forecast on Temperature
The Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya are likely to see highs soaring above 30°C (86°F), prompting caution over potential heat-related health risks.
Night-time, however, will bring a stark contrast in some areas.
Temperatures could drop below 10°C (50°F) in parts of the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and around Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Additionally, the department also highlighted the likelihood of strong winds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 meters per second) sweeping across the Coast, including Kenya’s territorial waters, as well as the South-eastern lowlands, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya.
These conditions could impact marine activities and transport.
Kenya Met advised the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions, especially in weather-sensitive sectors like agriculture, transport, and health.
Extreme Weather Conditions
Last week, the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a warning about strong southerly winds and large waves expected along the Kenyan coast.
However, three boats incidents were reported at Vidazini and Mnarani in Kilifi and Mutuni in Lamu on the morning of May 24.
Another boat capsized in the Chanu Channel, Lamu East, with four people on board on May 25, 2025.
Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir had even announced the closure of all public beaches from May 23rd to 25t.

“All public beaches in Mombasa County shall remain closed for 2 days effective immediately. All beach-related activities are strictly prohibited during this period,” the statement read in part.
El Nino and Other Climate Patterns
According to the State of the Climate Report Kenya 2024 released by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), the climate outlook for 2025 highlighted uncertain conditions in the early part of the year, with an equal 50% chance of either El Niño or La Niña events occurring up to April.
As the year progresses, particularly between March and August, conditions are expected to shift toward a neutral phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which involves sea surface temperature fluctuations in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean.
The report indicated that from July through October, there remains no strong signal favoring either La Niña or ENSO-neutral conditions.
However, ENSO-neutral appears slightly more likely from July to September, while La Niña becomes marginally more probable between August and October.
