The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a five-day weather forecast indicating that several parts of the country, particularly those in the west and around Lake Victoria, will experience rainfall during the burial weekend of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The forecast, valid from October 16th to 20th, 2025, shows that rainfall is expected across the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley, as well as some areas in the North-Eastern and North-Western regions.
The Department says showers and thunderstorms are likely to dominate the weekend from Friday through Monday, with varying intensity across the affected counties.
According to the bulletin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, which include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot counties are set to experience frequent showers and thunderstorms.
Kenya Met Areas to Receive Rainfall
On Saturday, October 18, when Raila’s body will be flown to Kisumu for a public viewing at Mamboleo Grounds before being taken to Bondo for an overnight stay, showers and thunderstorms are forecast “over several places,” with similar conditions expected on Sunday when the funeral will be held.

Daytime temperatures in these counties will range between 30°C and 31°C, while nights will be relatively cool at about 9°C to 10°C.
The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, covering Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi counties, will experience light showers over a few areas mainly in the afternoons, and partly cloudy nights.
Temperatures will range between 5°C and 30°C. The conditions suggest that memorial activities and gatherings planned in the capital and central Kenya will likely proceed with minimal disruption.
Turkana and Samburu counties in the North-Western region will experience sunny intervals in the mornings and a chance of light rains in a few places over the weekend, with maximum temperatures rising to 37°C.
Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo in the North-Eastern region are expected to record occasional rains over a few places, with highs of 38°C and lows of 16°C.
Areas to Remain Dry
In the South-Eastern lowlands, including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland areas of Tana River, conditions will remain mostly dry, with a few afternoon showers in isolated places.

Coastal counties, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will have sunny intervals throughout the weekend, with occasional morning showers and warm temperatures averaging 32°C to 33°C.

Raila Odinga’s final journey, which will draw thousands of mourners from across Kenya and abroad, is expected to be under cloudy skies, a fitting symbol of both nature’s solemn farewell and the nation’s collective grief.
