Kenya has officially reinstated visa-free entry for South African passport holders, allowing travellers from South Africa to enter the country without a visa in advance.
According to Travel and Tour World, the move, effective from 2026, comes as part of Kenya’s broader efforts to boost tourism, strengthen international relations, and simplify travel for foreign visitors.
South Africans can now explore Kenya’s renowned wildlife safaris, pristine beaches, and cultural landmarks without the administrative hurdles of visa applications.
Boost for Tourism and Regional Travel
This reinstatement follows a period during which South African travellers were required to apply for visas before visiting Kenya.
With the new policy, South Africans join a growing list of passport holders from 59 countries who can enter Kenya freely, facilitating both leisure and business travel.
Tourism officials expect the visa-free arrangement to increase tourist arrivals, particularly from South Africa, which has traditionally been one of Kenya’s key regional markets.
The visa-free access also aligns with global trends toward facilitating mobility for travellers.

Kenya Introduces Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
Kenya implemented an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for travelers entering the country.
The ETA allows eligible visitors to apply online for permission to travel to Kenya without the need for a traditional visa.
It simplifies entry by enabling travelers to obtain authorization in advance, reducing time spent at border points and streamlining the immigration process.
The ETA system is available for short visits, typically for tourism, business, or transit purposes.
Applicants provide personal and travel information online, and once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to their travel documents.
Travelers are advised to apply before departure to avoid delays and to ensure they meet entry requirements.
