A homeless Kenyan national, identified as Kepha Otundo, was found dead in Reading, Berkshire, in the United Kingdom after being exposed to extreme cold.
Reports indicate that Kepha had been living without shelter in tents along Abattoirs Road, where a makeshift encampment for homeless individuals had formed.
“At the time of his death, he was homeless and living in tents along Abattoirs Road in Reading, where a makeshift encampment had formed,” The Diaspora Times Shared.
The harsh winter conditions and lack of adequate protection led to the tragic death of Kepha Otundo.
Encampment Where Kepha Otundo Stayed Under Eviction Threat
The campsite had also been threatened with eviction.
Reading Borough Council secured a High Court Writ of Possession on July 4, 2025, ordering the removal of residents from the site.
The looming displacement left occupants uncertain about their future and further exposed them to the dangers of living outdoors during the winter months.
Authorities and support organisations have stressed that the death of Kepha Otundo shows the vulnerability of homeless individuals, particularly migrants living in precarious conditions.

Highlighted Hidden Struggles of Kenyans Abroad
According to The Diaspora Times, many Kenyans, like Kepha Otundo, suffer in silence, afraid to ask for help, embarrassed to admit hardship, or trapped by the fear of being seen as having “failed” overseas.
Further, Kenyans were advised that for those who are homeless, undocumented, mentally exhausted, or struggling to survive in extreme conditions, immediate help is crucial.

Local shelters, churches, charities, community groups, and Kenyan diaspora associations often provide emergency support regardless of immigration status, especially during winter.
Reading and Winter Conditions
Reading is a large town in Berkshire, England, known for its commercial centres and residential areas.
During winter, temperatures in Reading can drop significantly, often reaching near freezing levels.
Prolonged exposure to such cold, especially for people without proper shelter, clothing, or heating, poses serious health risks.
Homeless individuals in the town are particularly vulnerable during this season, as extreme cold can lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and, in severe cases, death.
