Kenyan Universities Open Postgraduate Scholarship Opportunities: How to Apply

Four Kenyan public universities have opened applications for 39 postgraduate scholarships under the Higher Education Science and Technology (HEST) Phase II Project, funded by the African Development Fund.

The University of Embu, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT), Kisii University, and the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) are offering opportunities at the master’s and PhD levels in fields including engineering, computer science, medicine, nursing, biomedical sciences, food science, and industrial biochemistry.

The programme is part of efforts to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) training and research capacity in Kenya.

University of Embu Offers 13 Scholarships

The University of Embu has announced 13 master’s-level scholarship positions for eligible Kenyan citizens aged 30 years and below.

The opportunities are available in the following programmes:

  • MSc Civil Engineering – Structural Engineering: 4 positions
  • MSc Civil Engineering – Water and Environmental Engineering: 3 positions
  • MSc Civil Engineering – Transportation Engineering: 4 positions
  • MSc ICT: 2 positions

Applicants for the MSc ICT programme are required to demonstrate the application of Artificial Intelligence.

Successful candidates will be engaged as Graduate Assistants as part of the programme.

The university has also advertised additional Graduate Assistant opportunities in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, those positions are not included in the 39 scholarships because successful applicants will be required to meet the cost of their postgraduate studies.

Applications for the funded scholarships should be submitted through the University of Embu recruitment portal by August 25, at 5 p.m.

DeKUT Announces 11 Postgraduate Scholarships

Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) has announced 11 postgraduate scholarship opportunities, comprising nine master’s-level positions and two PhD scholarships.

The master’s opportunities are:

  • MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering – Microelectronic Engineering: 2
  • MSc Mechanical Engineering – Machine Tools: 2
  • MSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering – Power Systems Engineering: 1
  • MSc Computer Science: 2
  • MSc Food Science and Technology: 1
  • MSc Industrial Biochemistry: 1

The two PhD opportunities are in:

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering – Power Systems Engineering: 1
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering – Geotechnical Engineering: 1

DeKUT has also listed technologist and technician positions in its advertisement, but these are separate from the funded postgraduate scholarship opportunities.

Applications should reach the Registrar, Academic Affairs and Research, by August 25, at 5 p.m.

Kisii University Offers 10 Scholarships

Kisii University has announced 10 master’s scholarship positions across four programmes.

  • MSc Information Technology: 2 positions
  • MSc Nursing: 3 positions
  • MSc Medicine: 2 positions
  • MSc Biomedical Sciences: 3 positions

The scholarships cover tuition fees and research costs for the duration of study.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens below 30 years of age and have at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in a relevant field from a recognised and accredited university.

Successful candidates will also be engaged as Graduate Assistants.

The programmes will be offered at different institutions, with Information Technology and Biomedical Sciences at Kisii University, Nursing at Chuka University and Medicine at Moi University.

The application deadline is August 25, at 5 p.m.

TUM Offers Five Scholarships

The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has opened applications for five master’s scholarship positions.

There is one position in each of the following programs:

  • MSc Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • MSc Mechanical Engineering
  • MSc Building and Civil Engineering
  • MSc Marine Engineering
  • MSc Computer Science

The scholarships cover tuition fees and research costs for the duration of the programme.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens below 30 years and hold at least a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree in a relevant field from a recognized and accredited university.

Successful candidates will be engaged as Graduate Assistants and will be required to comply with the university’s terms and conditions.

TUM has set August 18, 2026, as the application deadline.

Applications must be submitted online through the TUM career opportunities portal. The university has stated that applications sent by email or submitted in hard copy will not be accepted.

39 Scholarship Positions Available

The four universities have advertised a combined 39 funded postgraduate positions.

The opportunities provide eligible students with a pathway into postgraduate training in areas considered important to Kenya’s STEM skills development.

Applicants are advised to carefully review the specific requirements for their preferred programme and submit their applications before the respective deadlines.
