As campaigns for the 2022 general elections officially begin on Sunday, May 29, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced key dates in the run-up to August’s polls.
Registration of candidates vying for the presidential, senatorial and parliamentary positions, is expected to be completed on the same Sunday, May 29.
Registration of gubernatorial and women representative aspirants is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1.
Registration of candidate returns and ballot paper proofreading is scheduled for Tuesday, June 7, after which IEBC will prepare gazette notices of candidates who have been cleared and registered to vie for their respective seats.
The commission further set Thursday, June 9 for settling any disputes and claims which may arise from the nomination exercise.
IEBC is expected to publish a complete list of all registered aspirants on Monday, June 20
Nonetheless, the Wafula Chebukati-led commission on Saturday May, 28 released a list of 16 shortlisted presidential candidates who will move to the next phase of nominations that kicks off on Sunday, May 29.
Shortlisted Presidential Aspirants include:
- Prof. George Wajackoyah of Roots party
- David Mwaure Waihiga of Agano party
- Jimi Wanjigi of Safina,
- Thirdway alliance leader Dr. Ekuru Aukot
- Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria of Usawa party
- Njeru Kathangu of Ford Asili party
Independent candidates who made the list are; Gibson Ngaruiya Ng’ang’a, Dorothy Kemunto Nyangori, Peter Mubiko King’ori, Jeremiah Nyaga ,Jane Juliet Munyeki, Faith Wairimu Ngigi, Eliud Muthiora, and George Munyotta Kamau.
