Kenya’s former Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne Amadi, was sworn in on Saturday, March 7, as a judge of the First Instance Division of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ).
During the swearing ceremony, Anne Amadi swore allegiance to the East African Community and pledged to uphold, defend, and preserve the treaty that established the Community.
“I, Anne Atieno Amadi, do solemnly swear that I’ll be faithful and bear true allegiance to the East African community and that I will preserve, protect, and defend the treaty for the establishment of the East African community as by law established. So help me God.” Amadi vowed.
She also swore to remain faithful as she served as a judge to administer justice in accordance with the treaty, laws, and customs of the Community without fear, favor, affection, or ill will.
The 25th Ordinary Summit of the East African Heads of State took place in Arusha, Tanzania.
About Anne Amadi
Anne Amadi attained a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi. She continued on to pursue a postgraduate diploma in legal practice at the Kenya School of Law.
She also holds a master’s degree in criminal justice from Boston University, USA, and a postgraduate diploma in Alternative Dispute Resolution from California State University.
Furthermore, Anne Amadi has a postgraduate diploma in the Law of Internal Displacement from the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo, Italy.
She has been an advocate of the High Court of Kenya since 1989 and served as a Chief Registrar of the Judiciary between 2014 and 2024.
Between 1997 and 2003, Anne practiced law privately in Mombasa after serving as a magistrate in the Kenyan Judiciary for six years.
She was the Deputy Executive Director and Head of Litigation with the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kenya until May 2008.

Her role during this time involved the management of all the affairs of the three legal aids in the organization.
Additionally, she was in charge of project planning, implementation, conceptualization, and coordination of research activities, proposal writing for fundraisin,g and report writing
Anne Amadi is also the former National Coordinator of the National Legal Aid and Awareness Programme in Kenya.
A program that was designed to improve access to justice for the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable in society.
Additionally, she trained and practiced Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mediation.

Anne Amadi Failed IEBC Bid
After signing off as a Chief Registrar on January 12, 2024, Ann Amadi aimed to be the first woman to chair the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in 2025.
During this time, the panel for the recruitment of nominees for appointments for the chairperson and members of the IEBC announced that 37 candidates had applied for the chairperson position.
Among the 37 candidates, 11 candidates were shortlisted for the chairperson position, including Amadi. The panel, however, settled on Erastus Ethekon.
