Kenya’s Chan 2024 Quarter-Final Chances: Every Possible Outcome With Morocco In The Mix

With two matches played in the African Nations Championships (CHAN) 2024 tournament, Kenya’s Harambee Stars sit atop Group A with 4 points after a 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), followed by a 1-1 draw against Angola.

But with three matchdays remaining, the race to the quarterfinals is wide open. Only the top two teams will advance, and Kenya still has two crucial games to play—against Morocco (Sunday, August 10) and Zambia (Sunday, August 17).

Scenario breakdown: What each outcome means for Kenya

Winning the upcoming match against Morocco will move Kenya to 7 points. This would almost certainly guarantee them a place in the quarterfinals, regardless of the result in their final group game against Zambia. Morocco would remain on 3 points and would then need to win both of their remaining matches to stay in contention.

On the other hand, if Harambee Stars draw with Morocco, they will reach 5 points. In this case, a win against Zambia in their last match would take them to 8 points, securing qualification.

Even a draw against Zambia (ending with 6 points) could be enough to qualify, depending on how Morocco, DR Congo, and Angola perform in their remaining fixtures.

If Kenya loses to Morocco, they will stay on 4 points. Their qualification hopes would then depend entirely on beating Zambia in the final match. A draw or loss to Zambia in that scenario could see Kenya eliminated, especially if Morocco and DR Congo win their remaining games and Angola picks up points.

This means a win or draw against Morocco puts Kenya in a strong position, while a loss makes the final match against Zambia a must-win. The performances of Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia in their remaining fixtures will also play a crucial role in determining Kenya’s fate.

Other key fixtures and their impact

  • Zambia vs Angola (Aug 10): If Angola wins, they move to 4 points and stay in contention. A Zambia win keeps them alive.

  • Morocco vs Zambia (Aug 14): Morocco could reach 6 points with a win, putting pressure on Kenya.

  • Angola vs DR Congo (Aug 14): DR Congo could reach 6 points with a win, possibly overtaking Kenya.

  • DR Congo vs Morocco (Aug 17): A decisive match that could determine who joins Kenya in the quarters—or knocks them out.

  • Zambia vs Kenya (Aug 17): Could be a must-win for Kenya if they lose to Morocco.

Bottom Line: Kenya’s Path to the Knockouts

  • Win one of the two remaining games → Almost guaranteed qualification.

  • Draw both games → Likely to qualify but depends on other results.

  • Lose both games → Very likely to be eliminated.

Another key factor that could determine Kenya’s fate is goal difference. If teams finish the group stage with the same number of points—which is very possible in such a tight group—the head-to-head result between the tied teams will be used to break the tie followed by the goal difference, and the total goals scored in all group matches.

This means that how many goals Kenya scores or concedes in their final two matches could be just as important as the match results themselves.

Kenya Vs Morocco

As Kenya prepares for the clash against Morocco, seasoned sports journalist Fred Arocho has offered a sobering perspective on the Harambee Stars’ chances—one rooted not in pessimism, but realism.

“I love Kenya, and I love the Harambee Stars, but I am realistic,” Arocho said, pointing out a key factor that could tilt the balance in Morocco’s favor: rest and recovery.

While Kenya battled Angola in a high-intensity match just days ago, Morocco had no fixture and will face Kenya with at least five days of rest, compared to Kenya’s two or three.

This disparity in recovery time, Arocho argues, could significantly affect performance levels, especially in a tournament where physical conditioning is crucial. “They will be facing us fresh,” he noted, “while we’ll still be recovering.”

Arocho also emphasized the importance of game management. Should Kenya concede, he warns, they must avoid a heavy defeat. Morocco beat Angola by two goals; a loss by a wider margin could hurt Kenya’s goal difference—a potential tiebreaker in a tightly contested group.

Beyond the Morocco fixture, the journalist highlighted the Angola vs DR Congo match as another pivotal moment. A draw in that game would be ideal for Kenya, keeping DR Congo from gaining ground before their final match against Morocco.

A strong performance against Morocco could seal the deal early. But with Group A still wide open, every goal and point will count.

Current CHAN 2024 Group A standings

Team Played Points Goal Difference
Kenya 2 4 1
Morocco 1 3 2
DRC 2 3 1
Angola 2 1 -2
Zambia 1 0 -2
