Kisii MP Adopts 32 Children, Promises to Educate Them till Form Four

The Member of Parliament for Nyaribare Chache constituency Zaheer Jhanda has adopted 32 pupils who failed to secure bursaries offered through the National Government – Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF).

Speaking on Wednesday, March 1 while in his constituency, Jhanda said he will not only adopt and pay school fees for the 32 pupils but also cater for their needs.

The MP who was addressing members of the press said that the pupils missed the bursaries due to late application.

“We have pupils who did not manage to get the bursaries due to late applications and some of them come from very vulnerable backgrounds, so I decided as a Member of Parliament and as a human being to bring them together and fully fund their school fees for the next four years,” Jhanda said.

The MP further stated that the money with which he will fund the education of the 32 is his own and not the government’s.

“I have personally decided to sponsor these students so that they can go to school from tomorrow. I will be the father of the students and I will be visiting them at their respective different schools,” the MP said.

Jhanda’s announcement comes a month after Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu stated that the government released Ksh2.7 billion for university loans and bursaries for 180,000 students.

Machogu said that Treasury has sent the funds to the Higher Education Loans Board for further disbursement to eligible students ahead of varsity examinations.

“The Education Ministry is aware that the majority of Government sponsored students in our public and private universities are preparing to sit their end-of-semester examinations for the 2022/2023 academic calendar,” the CS said.
