Kisumu Girls High School is a public girls’ national secondary school located in Kisumu County.
The school was founded in 1962 as an offshoot of Kisumu Boys’ High School and initially operated as a mixed-gender institution before transitioning to become a girls-only school.
It was officially opened in 1963, the same year Kenya attained independence. Following independence, Kisumu Girls High School transitioned from Asian to African leadership as per the changes in governance across public institutions in Kenya during that period.
Originally, it was a three-stream school until 1977, when two other streams were introduced.
Kisumu Girls’ High School history
Kisumu Girls’ longest-serving principal, Mrs. Mary Akunja, led the school since 2007, as the ninth principal in its history, until her transfer after serving for more than 13 years.
The learning institution is currently managed by the government through the Ministry of Education and has an approximate student population of 1,200.

Since its inception in 1962, Kisumu Girls has consistently performed well in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) national examinations.
Due to this stellar performance, the school was upgraded to national status in 2012. The school was then re-registered as a six-streamed institution in 2014.
KCSE performance
In the 2024 KCSE examinations, Kisumu Girls presented 359 candidates, out of which a total of 318 who wrote the tests qualified to join public universities.
The school also posted an impressive mean of 8.3, with a mean grade of B- and a direct university transition rate of 88.6 percent.
In the 2022 KCSE, the school scored a mean score of 8.478, an improvement from the 2021 results, where the school attained a mean score of 8.012.
Out of the 266 students who sat the 2022 exams, a total of nine got A plane, 21 students scored A-, 48 students B+, 54 Students got B plain, and a total of 57 students had B-. 43 got C+, 25 got C plain, seven had C,- while two students had D+.

In accordance with the Ministry of Education’s 2020 guidelines, national schools in Kenya were grouped into four fee clusters.
Kisumu Girls was placed under Cluster Four (IV), with the official annual fee cap set at approximately Ksh75,798 per student. However, actual payable fees may vary depending on the school’s specific needs and arrangements.
