The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) has introduced a structured achievement-level system to help parents, teachers, and learners understand across the nine learning areas.
The results, announced by the Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos, categorize learners into four achievement bands; each tied to a specific percentage range and a point score.
They include Exceeding Expectations (EE), Meeting Expectations (ME), Approaching Expectations (AE), and Below Expectations (BE), with an average benchmark.
In addition, 8 is the highest possible. The highest Possible Point is 8 Points, the Learning Areas = 72.
However, the highest possible points within the nine learning areas are 8.
KJSEA Introduces Four Major Achievement Levels
The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) has outlined a structured framework to help parents and educators interpret learners’ performance across nine learning areas.
The assessment uses four major achievement categories, each divided into two sub-levels:
- Exceeding Expectations (EE) – This category is for students who score between 75% and 100%. Students achieving 90% to 100% earn 8 points, while those scoring 75% to 89% receive 7 points.
- Meeting Expectations (ME) – Learners in this category score between 41% and 74%. Students with scores of 58% to 74% earn 6 points, and those scoring 41% to 57% receive 5 points.
- Approaching Expectations (AE) – In this category, students score between 21% and 40%. Those scoring 31% to 40% earn 4 points, while students with scores of 21% to 30% receive 3 points.
- Below Expectations (BE) – Students who score below the expected standard fall under this category. Those with scores of 11% to 20% earn 2 points, and learners scoring 1% to 10% receive 1 point.

Although the KJSEA scoring system allows for a maximum of 8 points per learning area, the highest possible total score is 72 points, while 36 points is considered the national average.
Placement of Grade 9
According to CS Ogamba, the placement of learners will begin next week and run until December 20, 2025. Grade 10 learners will report to their respective schools on January 12, 2026.
“Learners will be placed to Senior Schools based on their performance and selected pathway. In line with the recommendation by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reform, the assessment of learners at Grade 9 shall comprise 20% from the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment, 20% from School Based Assessment in Grades 7 and 8 and 60% Summative Evaluation at Grade 9. This Summative Evaluation is the KJSEA,” said Ogamba.
The Ministry of Education further noted that current secondary schools have been clustered based on the pathways that they will offer.
“The total capacity of the 9,540 Senior Schools is 2.2 million learners. A total of 929,262 learners will be exiting secondary school after KCSE this year,” the CS stated.
