The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has sent a message to Kenyans who have petitions stopping the issuance of bursaries in Samburu County.
KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu asked the petitioners to withdraw the cases to allow learners from humble backgrounds to afford school fees.

He stated that the issues could be resolved out of court to allow the learning process to continue in the county.
“Those concerned should find it in their heart to come out of court so that learners in Samburu County can resume bursaries so that they can learn,” he said.

Oyuu said Samburu is a needy county, and such a move would disadvantage the majority of the students who depend on the funds.
“If a needy place like Samburu who cannot receive bursaries because somebody has gone to court. It is shameful and inhuman. What is that we cannot address so that our learners can go to school?” he added.

Additionally, KNUT asked the government to beef security in Samburu to ensure the safety of teachers and students.
Oyuu complained that the attacks experienced in the county instill fear in teachers and learners while they are in school.
“Issues of insecurity is one thing that is in the lips of everybody in Samburu up to and including teachers and learners who are affected. Just the other day, two people were killed and 10 injured in a banditry attack.”
“We want to call upon the government to consider beefing up security in areas like Samburu.”

KNUT Asks TSC to Transfer Teachers to Samburu
Further, he urged the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to transfer 41 teachers from Marsabit to Samburu.
He explained that the teachers were posted to Marsabit county during the delocalization, and they have not been brought back home after the policy was abolished.
“A number of teachers were delocalized to Marsabit county and have not been brought back. Why the 41 teachers are still in Marsabit leaves more questions than answers. These teachers should be brought back to Samburu,” he said.

Former Laikipia Woman Representative Maison Leshoomo also decried the increasing insecurity in the county.
Leshoomo said the locals were shocked after a bus was attacked and several people killed.
“They have started targeting passengers in roads that people use. You can’t tell who is safe in Samburu. We were shocked that a bus was blown up, and another person walked in and sprayed bullets on the survivors,” she said.
