Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has revealed the top four Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) courses that attracted the highest number of applicants during the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) application process.

Speaking while releasing the KUCCPS placement results for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) on Tuesday, July 1, CS Ogamba said nursing diploma and certificate programs attracted the highest number of applicants.

According to CS Ogamba, the nursing programs received over 27,000 applications.

These were followed closely by Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Medical Emergency Technician, and Community Health programs.

“Regarding KMTC, 52,725 qualified students submitted placement applications against a capacity of 34,048. Nursing diploma and certificate programs, with a combined capacity of 2,986, attracted the highest number of applicants—over 27,000, indicating a growing demand for nursing,” he said.

“Other popular KMTC programs include Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Medical Emergency Technician, and Community Health.”

The Diploma in Nursing and the Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery—both of which require a minimum mean grade of C, with at least a C in English or Kiswahili and Biology, and a C- in Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics—are offered at KMTC campuses in Bondo, Eldoret, Kisii, Nyeri, and Thika.

Students aspiring to join emergency medical services can apply for the Certificate in Medical Emergency Technician, which requires a mean grade of C-, with at least a D in Biology. This program is available at campuses in Bomet, Bungoma, Eldoret, and Kisumu.

The Diploma in Community Health requires a minimum mean grade of C in the KCSE. To qualify, an applicant must have at least a C- in English or Kiswahili, a D+ in Biology and a D in either Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Home Science, or Agriculture.

Out of the 52,725 applicants, a total of 25,034 students have been placed in KMTC programs, including 6,750 students who scored a C+ and above in the 2024 KCSE examinations.

“KUCCPS has now opened the second round of applications for KMTC’s September intake, and I encourage interested applicants to take advantage of this opportunity,” Ogamba noted.

KUCCPS Places Over 310,000 Students in 2024 Intake

Meanwhile, of the 244,563 students who qualified for degree programs in 2024, 201,165 — or 83% — applied for placement.

KUCCPS has placed a total of 310,052 students in various programs in universities and colleges.

This figure includes applicants from the 2024 KCSE cohort as well as from previous years.

Of the 244,563 candidates who scored a C+ and above in 2024, 194,372 — representing 80% — have been placed in programs at various levels.

This year, KUCCPS received 20,786 applications for the Diploma in Teacher Education program against a capacity of 13,823.

A total of 11,636 applicants secured placement, out of whom 10,800 have already been placed in the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education program, which has a capacity of 11,880.

A further 836 students have been placed in the Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education program, which has a capacity of 2,735.

Another positive development is the introduction of the Kenya School of Law’s Diploma in Law to the KUCCPS placement portal, with a capacity of 500. The program received overwhelming interest, and all slots were filled.
