The Kenya Urban Road Authority (KURA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Eldoret Road in Nairobi for an estimated four months, with expected traffic disruption.
According to KURA, the Eldoret road will be closed from 6:00 am on May 18 to 6:00 pm on September 18, 2026.
In a public notice issued by the Authority on May 11, the intended construction of a vehicular bridge across the Nairobi River is the reason for the temporary road closure.
“We wish to notify the general public that a section of Eldoret Road, Nairobi, will be closed as from 6:00 a.m. Monday, 18th May, 2026, till 6:00 p.m. Friday, 18th September, 2026 (Four Months),” KURA public notice read.
Temporary closure of the Eldoret Road, which is located in the Pumwani area of Nairobi, will affect the traveling in the local streets of Pumwani and Eastland areas that link to the Nairobi routes.
Additionally, potential feeder roads to major roads like Jogoo Road will be affected, which will, in turn, cause disruptions and detours during travel.
Local traffic and pedestrians in residential areas along the affected section of the Eldoret road will cause localized congestion in East Nairobi.
With the closure, motorists have been advised to use alternative routes as well as follow the guidance from the police and marshals.
Motorists are advised to follow the detours, including using parallel local streets in the Eastland area and nearby major connectors to reach Jogoo Road and other arterial roads to the north and south of the closed section.
Alternatively, motorists can use the Ngong Road area connections or link to Mbagathi Road, Lang’ata Road, and the inner connector roads, depending on the destination.
Alternative routes to be used by the motorists will ensure that there is limited disruption in both the traffic and the interruption in the construction of the bridge.
Furthermore, the authority has apologized for the inconvenience that might result from the temporary closure of the section of Eldoret Road.
In addition, the Authority emphasized that the project aims to improve transport infrastructure and traffic flow within the area.
Construction of the vehicular bridge will also upgrade and modernize key river crossings along the Nairobi River, improving the urban mobility of vehicles in Nairobi, according to KURA.

KURA Projects
Similar to the construction of the bridge in sections of the Eldoret road, KURA has been implementing projects to upgrade Nairobi’s bridges and river crossings to address traffic congestion and modernize urban mobility.
A major four-lane elevated flyover with pedestrian and cycling lanes at the Ngong-Naivasha junction mall area project is among the prominent projects by the Authority.
In the early 2026, the project was reported to have been 85 to 89% complete since its construction began in 2024.
Further, along the Globe Roundabout on the Thika superhighway, KENHA carried out urgent reinstatement and repair in March 2026, resulting in a temporary closure lasting a week.
KURA has also been involved in multiple initiatives, including the upgrading and repairs along the Kenyatta Avenue Viaduct and the upper Hill overpasses.
Additionally, the authority has been responsible for overseeing bridges and drainage projects as part of the transforming urban mobility agenda.
