The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) through their Secretary General Constantine Wesonga issued a seven-day strike notice in January.
In a statement on Thursday January 16, 2025, staff at the institution issued a strike notice citing unresolved grievances.
According to UASU, the government had failed to honour a signed agreement that was agreed upon in November 2024.
This came after UASU called off a nationwide strike after signing a return-to-work agreement with the Ministry of Education last year.

Lecturers Demand
One of the issues the union wants to be addressed, is the failure by the government to pay lecturers their December 2024 salaries.
Moreover, the union raised concerns over consistent delays in their salary payments.
UASU claimed that the university management has been delaying paying their University staff’s salaries which is a violation of the law and constitutes a clear breach of the Bill of rights.
Additionally, the union complained of failure by the university to remit statutory and third-party deductions. The union stated that this negligence has caused its members immense physical, mental, and financial distress.
Further, it has called for the provision of a Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme, citing non-compliance with legal provisions.
The union also seeks to protest the blatant violation of academic staff’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
