Kenyan drivers can now confirm the validity of their driving licence online through the government’s eCitizen portal, following the complete phase-out of the former NTSA TIMS system.
The transition makes eCitizen the sole official platform for checking licence details, offering a faster and more convenient way to stay compliant with traffic regulations.
The government confirmed that the move to eCitizen was designed to centralise services and reduce delays caused by the old TIMS platform.
Drivers are advised to regularly check their licence status to avoid penalties for expired or invalid documents, ensuring they always remain road legal.
Step-by-Step Process of Checking Driving Licence Status

How to Apply for a Smart Driving Licence in Kenya
Kenyan drivers seeking the new-generation smart driving licences can now apply entirely online through the government’s eCitizen portal.
The upgrade replaces the red booklet licences with a secure, card-based format embedded with a microchip, making verification faster and reducing fraud.
Begin by visiting www.ecitizen.go.ke and logging in with your national ID number and password or creating an account if you do not have one.
After signing up, choose the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) services tab and select Driving Licence. Click on Apply.
Provide your personal details as requested, then book an appointment at your preferred NTSA centre for biometric capture.

On the day of the appointment, please bring your original ID card and old driving licence for verification purposes.
The application fee is currently Ksh 3,050, payable directly on the portal via mobile money, debit/credit card, or bank transfer.
Once biometrics are captured and payment is confirmed, NTSA processes the licences, which are typically ready within a few weeks.
Drivers receive an SMS notification when it is available for collection at the chosen centre.
