Mass layoffs are looming at Moi University after the institution issued a redundancy notice to its staff in a bid to remain afloat.
In a letter written to the UASU union, the acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kiplagat Kotut stated that the move is due to a reduction in revenue.
“In accordance with Section 40 of the Employment Act 2007, Laws of Kenya, and the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Moi University and the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), we hereby give formal notice of our intention to declare redundancy affecting a number of employees who are members of your Union,” part of the letter read.
According to the University, the reduction in revenue was brought about by a decline in student numbers, which has created a challenging operating environment, making it difficult for the institution to meet its financial obligations, including the payment of employee salaries.
“As a result, we are compelled to review our operations and adjust the workforce accordingly to ensure the sustainability of the University,” the university stated.
Moi University to Declare Staff Redundant
Additionally, the university stated that during the notice period, it will consult with the affected employees and their Union representatives, in accordance with the law and the UASU CBA.
“Our objective is to explore all possible alternatives to limit the impact of the redundancy, including potential redeployment or alternative roles where possible,” the letter added.

Moreover, the institution reiterated its commitment to ensuring full compliance with the provisions of the Employment Act, individual contracts, and the UASU CBA 2012/2013.
At the same time, Moi University announced that the affected employees will be entitled to:
- Severance Pay
- Salary in lieu of notice
- Payment for accrued leave days
- Any other unpaid benefits due to them
Redundancy Exercise to Be Conducted Fairly
The university also stated that all necessary deductions will be made in accordance with the applicable statutory requirements.
Furthermore, the institution announced that the details of the employees affected by the redundancy issue will be revealed, and the proposed timeline for the redundancy process will be communicated to them in due course.
The university assured the staff that the exercise will be carried out fairly and transparently.

For a while, Moi University has been plagued by financial challenges largely attributed to the administration, an issue that President William Ruto acknowledged during his tour of the Rift Valley Region in November 2024 and promised to investigate.
Later, in January 2025, Education CS Julius Ogamba disbanded the Moi University Council and appointed a new one led by Noah Midamba.
However, despite the management changes, the institution’s Lecturers issued a seven-day strike notice over delayed salaries on March 21.
