Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has issued an update on the condition of students admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) following the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County, which claimed the lives of 16 girls.
In a statement on May 31, Mike Sonko said he visited the injured learners in his role as Good Deeds Goodwill Ambassador in Kenya, noting that the visit was meant to offer encouragement and moral support during their recovery.
He described the experience as emotional after listening to the survivors’ accounts of how they sustained injuries while trying to escape the flames.
“I listened to their painful stories and saw the injuries they sustained while fighting to escape the flames. Despite the trauma they have endured, I thank God that most of them are now out of danger and recovering well,” Mike Sonko said.
Mike Sonko Issues Update on the Health of Students
From the visit, Sonko reported that some of the students suffered injuries after jumping from the building, while others sustained burns and injuries to their limbs, heads, and other parts of the body during the escape.
Despite the severity of the incident, he stated that most of the survivors were now out of danger and responding well to treatment.
He added that the visit was aimed at reassuring the survivors that they are not alone and that continued support would be offered throughout their recovery period.

“Despite the pain and trauma they endured, I was encouraged to learn that most of them are now out of danger and responding well to treatment,” Mike Sonko noted.
Sonko also expressed sympathy to families who lost their daughters in the fire and extended condolences during what he described as a deeply painful tragedy.
During the visit, Sonko said he brought flowers and essential items for the patients as a gesture of support.
The items included mineral water, sanitary towels, tissue papers, fruits, yogurt, Ribena, Lucozade, and chocolates, among other supplies intended to assist and comfort the students during their hospital stay.

Sonko Pledges Support to Bereaved Families After Fatal Fire
In an earlier statement on May 29, Sonko visited Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil to express solidarity with bereaved families and leaders in the wake of the tragedy.

He stated that the visit was meant to stand with Hon. Martha Wangari, affected families, and the wider Gilgil community as they continue to mourn the victims of the tragedy.
Sonko extended condolences to the families who lost their daughters and pledged support, including assistance with transportation of the bodies to various parts of the country and provision of coffins for the affected families.
“I have pledged our support, including assisting with transportation of the bodies to different parts of the country and providing coffins to the affected families,” he said.
He also acknowledged the roles of the Nakuru County security team, the County Disaster Management team, the Kenya Red Cross, and nominated Senator Crystal Asige for their response and support during the incident.
