Ann Nyawera, mother of 21-year-old son Brian Kimutai, has been forced to hide the lifeless body of her son, who was fatally shot during the nationwide Saba Saba demonstrations.
Speaking to the media, Ann Nyawera said she has been forced to hide the body away from police, keeping it in their car instead of leaving it at the mortuary.
The family told the press that they fear that officers would confiscate it to cover up the killing.
“We have had a very hard time because the police wanted to take away the body to hide the evidence of what they had done. We had to pick the body from the hospital and hide it,” Nyawera said.

The family’s ordeal began immediately after Brian was pronounced dead at a local hospital on Monday, July 7, during the protests.
When they attempted to transfer his body to the mortuary, they were turned away for lacking a permit, an official requirement for anybody to be admitted.

Therefore, they rushed to the police station to obtain the necessary documentation. However, the officers were unwilling to help them, forcing them to go back home without the admission.
“The mortuary refused to take him because we did not have a permit. So we went to the police station to get the documents. The officers refused to attend to us, saying that they were tired and asked us to go back home,” she explained.

Nyawera Returns to the Mortuary
Nyawera and her family have now returned to the police station, where they were finally given an OB (Occurrence Book) number.
But Nyawera says the police officers were still taking them in circles, raising suspicion about a possible cover up plot.
“The officers were standing next to me and I heard they saying to each other that they wanted to trace where we would take the body so that they can come back and take it away in the late hours,” added the mother.
By the time of publication, the family had not managed to deliver Brian’s body to a secure mortuary and is pushing for an independent postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.
Additionally, they said they fear that without transparency, Brian’s case will be buried without justice.
“We have brought our child to the morgue for postmortem to know what killed him, but the officers wanted to take him,” Nyawera lamented.
