Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a shoot-to-kill order to police officers against anyone who storms a police station, targets police firearms, or attacks a police officer.

Murkomen issued the directive during a visit to damaged police stations in Kiambu County on Thursday, June 26, 2025, following the crackdown on the nationwide Gen‑Z protests the previous day.

He said the police officers should defend their stations, ammunition, government officers and lives even if it means shooting protesters.

Murkomen told police officers can shoot such people as long as they don’t walk out of their stations and “look” for who to kill.

“When someone comes to the police station and wants to take over the government’s office, police gun and your life, pita nayeye (shoot him). I will stand for the case that comes afterwards. As long as you have not left the station to look for someone to kill. But if someone comes to the police station and wants arms, guns, and to kill you, that is disrespect,” he said.

Murkomen said he is in full support of the police as they work to maintain law and order.

He directed police officers to fight back in such scenarios, adding that the government will handle the case.

He told the officers not to allow the protesters to beat them up, yet they have guns.

“You have my 100% support and should not be afraid. Don’t allow yourself to be beaten, and you are a police officer with a gun, that will be useless. Do what you can, we will handle the case. Have you heard of me?” he asked.

In a another footage, Murkomen told residents that he had directed police officers to open fire on anyone attempting to storm police stations with malicious intent.

“Ile shida inafanya saa zingine polisi wapige wakora risasi ni kwa sababu wanashikwa, wanaenda alafu wanarudi kuchekelea polisi wakisema sasa tulifika wapi, hakuna kwenye tulienda. Na tumeambia polisi, mtu yeyote ambaye atakaribia police station, piga yeye risasi,” Murkomen said.

This translate to”The problem sometimes that makes police officers shoot criminals is that they get arrested, released from custody and come back to mock the police asking ‘Where did you take us, there’s no place we went to.’ We have instructed the police that anyone who comes near a police station, shoot them.”

Murkomen Explains When Police Should Escape

He said police officers should only escape when their ammunition is not enough to handle the situation.

However, he said the police officers were taught to fight and given arms to deal with up to 20 people.

“You should escape when you feel that the arms you have, even if you use five or six, the attackers are still too many. But if there are 10 or 20 people, can’t you do that job? And you were taught to do that? You have to protect yourself and the country and defend yourself,” he said.

Guns not Decoration Statement

Murkomen told officers to ensure that it was the last time a police station and security agencies were attacked.

He told officers to always ensure they fight for their lives using the guns assigned to them.

“These guns you have been given are not decorations. If someone attacks a police station targeting to steal guns or kill you, save yourself first.  The other stories will be handled later, and I will be at the forefront of defending you,” he said.

The CS however clarified that the shoot-to-kill order was exclusively for thugs who attack police stations and steal guns from there.

“Those looking for help, shelter, and reporting cases are okay, but people who come to snatch guns from the police, those who attack police and think that guns are toys must be stopped,” Murkomen said.

Govt Support to the Police

Murkomen emphasised that the government will defend and support police officers.

He asked the security officers to defend the country and prevent lawlessness from prevailing.

“If it were not for you, these people who despise you and talk a lot of English and reside in Karen, would we have a country? If we lose our country, then even their grammar will not help them. Kenya will be like our neighbouring countries with no government and chaos,” Murkomen said.

Murkomen pledged to support police officers during his tenure as Interior CS, stating that they are doing a good job of saving the country.

Investigations & Orders from Above

He said the government will work with security agencies to arrest everyone who stormed police stations and their sponsors.

“We will arrest everybody who raided police stations and put them in court. Those who are financed and their bosses will be arrested. They even burned down the courts, so everyone is in danger,” he said.

He said he is not the only one supporting the police, but there are also “orders from above” as well.

“I will use all my energy, and this is mine alone; it is an order from above. The government is with you 100% to ensure you are protected from these heinous acts,” he said.

Police Stations Attacked

Murkomen said criminals posing as protesters stormed Dagoretti Police Post and stole ammunition and police uniforms.

The attackers also set ablaze six vehicles belonging to private owners and the county government.

Similar incidents were reported at the Ruthimitu Chief’s Office in Dagoretti South, the Kikuyu Deputy County Commissioner’s Office, the Kikuyu National Registration Bureau offices, and the Kikuyu Law Courts.
