Thousands of Nairobi residents, businesses, and public institutions may soon face a water shortage, following a notice issued by the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) regarding unpaid water bills.
In an enforcement drive scheduled to begin on October 15, NCWSC announced it will disconnect water services for all consumers with outstanding balances, regardless of category or status.
The move affects domestic households, commercial properties, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), county governments, and other water service providers.
“No institution or consumer is exempt from the enforcement measures,” said Acting Managing Director Martin Nang’ole in the official notice released on October 7.
Water Disconnection in Nairobi
According to NCWSC, the disconnection exercise follows repeated reminders to customers who have defaulted.
Despite numerous notices, a large number of accounts remain in default, prompting the utility company to take “decisive enforcement measure” aimed at recovering overdue arrears.

Consumers are being urged to settle their bills promptly to avoid being disconnected.
The company stated that reconnections will only be processed after full payment is received.
Acceptable payment options include M-Pesa Paybill number 444400, the NCWSC customer portal, authorized banks, and designated pay points.
Deadline to Clear Pending Bills
The utility company warned that delayed action by consumers could jeopardize Nairobi’s broader water service sustainability.
“The Company remains committed to delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable water services. This commitment, however, relies on timely payment and responsible consumption,” the statement read.

With just over a week to go, affected customers are racing against time to clear their dues and avoid disruption in water supply.
Water Disruptions in Nairobi
This comes days after the company had announced a temporary water supply interruption affecting several estates in Nairobi.
On October 2, Nairobi Water issued a notice informing customers of a planned water supply interruption to facilitate the interconnection of the Kigoro-Gigiri-Kabete water pipeline at the Gigiri Pumping Station and Reservoir.
The essential upgrade took place from Friday, October 3, 2025, at 6:00 a.m. to Saturday, October 4, 2025, at 8:00 a.m.
Areas that experienced a temporary disruption in water supply during this period include the estates in Westlands and Lavington.
Estates in these areas are: Riverside, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King’ara Road, Riara Road, and environs.
