Several people are feared dead after a grisly collision between a passenger matatu and a trailer on the busy Nakuru–Nairobi highway on September 28, 2025.
The accident happened near Kariandusi in Elementaita, Gilgil subcounty, when a Nissan matatu belonging to a local Sacco collided head-on with a trailer.
Multiple passengers are feared dead, as others sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals, as emergency workers and police continued rescue operations.
Photos from the scene showed the matatu overturned on the roadside, with the trailer halted a few yards ahead.
Traffic along the highway was disrupted for hours as officers diverted vehicles to a single lane. Motorists were urged to exercise caution while using the route.
The cause of the accident had not been immediately established, though investigations were underway.
The Nakuru–Nairobi highway has long been notorious for deadly accidents, often linked to speeding, driver fatigue, and poor vehicle maintenance.

Earlier Accident on Nakuru–Nairobi Highway
The crash came less than 24 hours after a deadly ambulance accident on the same highway claimed six lives.
The ambulance, affiliated with St. Mary’s Elementaita, was ferrying a critically ill patient when it lost control near Kimende on Saturday night.
According to reports, the patient, her husband, two relatives, a nurse, and the driver all died instantly. Photos from the scene showed the ambulance reduced to a twisted wreck.
Witnesses said the vehicle had been speeding as it attempted to rush the patient to the hospital. The site of the crash, near Kimende, is notorious for fatal accidents and is considered one of Kenya’s black spots.
Just a day earlier, on Friday, another crash at Gilgil triggered a major traffic snarl-up after a truck overturned between Kikopey and St. Mary’s.
Several vehicles were involved in the pile-up, though the number of casualties was not immediately confirmed.
The string of accidents has once again turned the spotlight on the Nakuru–Nairobi highway, where deadly crashes continue to claim lives despite repeated calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety measures.

Road crashes claimed 420 pedestrian lives in the first quarter of 2025, making them the most vulnerable road users, though the figure dropped from 434 in the same period last year.
Various crashes also killed 189 passengers and 83 drivers, both numbers lower than the 243 passengers and 94 drivers who died in 2024.
However, motorcycle crashes claimed more lives, with 301 motorcyclists dying, up from 274 the previous year.
