Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has issued a statement after the resignation of Vice President Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice President of India, resigned from his office on the night of Monday, July 11, with immediate effect.
He wrote a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, statting that he is stepping down due to health reasons.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” his letter read in part.
In a statement, Modi said Dhankhar has served India in different positions and wished him good health.
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” Modi said.
Dhankar became India’s Vice President on August 11, 2022, and should have served for five years until August 2027.
His resignation came just hours after he presided over the first day of the Monsoon session in Parliament as chairman of Rajya Sabha.

In the letter, Dhankar extended gratitude to the President for her unwavering support and wonderful working relationship during his tenure.
He also thanked Narendra Modi and the esteemed Council of Ministers, stating that their cooperation and support have been invaluable.
Dhankar said he has been learning a lot from his superiors during his time in office.
Additionally, he expressed gratitude to the Members of Parliament for their warmth, trust, and affection.
“I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy,” he said.

Serving as Vice President
He affirmed that it was a privilege to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented development.
“Serving in this transformative era of our nation’s history has been a true honor. As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” he said.

Next Steps After Dhankar’s Resignation
Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019-2022 before becoming Vice President.
He is the third Vice President of India to resign during his tenure after VV Giri and R Venkataraman.
India will now have to hold elections within the next six months to fill the post of Vice President.
However, the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman will take over the House proceedings until a new Vice President is elected.
