Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has been heckled while attending the funeral of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s mother Maayi Ann Nanyama.

When Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka invited Natembeya to speak, voices from the crowd could be heard shouting, “Heshimu Weta wewe, Weta si rika yako,” loosely translated as “Respect Wetang’ula. He is not of your age.”

More noises could be heard in the background before one of the funeral organizers intervened to rescue the governor from the hostile crowd, asking them to stop heckling.

“This is our mother’s funeral. If you came to mourn with us, we don’t want unnecessary and unfriendly noise,” she said.

Natembeya Explains Why He Attended Burial

He revealed that he attended the burial because he has friends in the family and had been in communication with the Speaker’s father, Dominic Wetang’ula, when Maayi Annah was sick.

Additionally, he mentioned that he had sent him some cash to help during that time.

“I have come here because in this family, I have friends. Mzee Dominic, I often talk to him, even when the mother died,” he said.

“Those making noises, before she passed away, I talked to Mzee and even sent him money when she was in the hospital. I gave him money.”

He also stated that he has brothers and friends, including Fred Wetang’ula and Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi.

Natembeya stated that politics is not a personal thing. He revealed that politics and a person losing a mother, or a parent are two different things.

“The political issues we have been engaging in are not personal. It’s not personal. I am here because the Speaker has lost his mother, and death can come to anyone,” Natembeya emphasized.

“We cannot have boundaries just because someone is grieving due to politics and then push them aside. And for those who are making noise here, I think you have better use for your mouth, please.”

Rift Between the Governor and Wetang’ula

The battle for political supremacy between Moses Wetang’ula and George Natembeya has heated up in the past, with leaders mobilizing ahead of the 2027 general election, seeking the necessary support for alliance building.

Natembeya, known for being a no-nonsense former public administrator, is the founder of the Tawe (Enough is Enough) movement.

This movement has challenged Wetang’ula’s Ford Kenya party, which has traditionally maintained a stronghold in Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties.

This is not just a battle of words, but a manifestation of the deep-rooted divisions created by this power struggle challenging Moses Wetangula’s seasoned reign.
