Fresh details have emerged regarding the death of Gilbert Kinyua, a patient who was murdered in a ward at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on February 6, 2025.
According to media reports, it has now been established that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) carried out thorough investigations and identified Kennedy Kalombotole as the main suspect behind the murder of the 40-year-old patient.
The DCI conducted detailed investigations, including interrogations of various witnesses, and forwarded its recommendations to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP). However, the ODPP allegedly failed to act on the findings.
DPP on the Spot for Allegedly Ignoring DCI Files
A report dated June 30, 2025, narrates how Gilbert Kinyua was murdered, based on the accounts of the nurse who was on duty the night of the incident, as well as statements from the victim’s family, hospital security, doctors, and investigators.
The report further established that Kennedy Kalombotole was Kinyua’s bedmate at the time of his death.
It concluded that, based on the evidence gathered during the investigations, Kennedy Kalombotole was responsible for Kinyua’s death and should be charged with the offence of murder.

According to the DCI findings, blood drops were found on the floor leading from Kinyua’s bed to Kalombotole’s bed. Samples and swabs taken from a pair of black sandals worn by Kalombotole were also found to be slightly stained with human blood. The knife recovered during scene documentation was confirmed as the murder weapon.
Despite the DCI’s recommendations pointing to Kennedy Kalombotole as the main suspect in the murder of Gilbert Kinyua, the ODPP failed to act.
Kennedy Kalombotole Accused for 2 Murders at KNH
It was only after another murder incident involving Edward Maingi at the KNH facility, where the same suspect was again linked to the scene, that the DPP acted.
Edward Maingi was murdered at KNH on July 17, 2025, with his body discovered around 2 p.m. in Ward 7B, Group C (Male).
So far, Kennedy Kalombotole has been arraigned in court in connection with the murders of two patients at Kenyatta National Hospital.
He was first arraigned at the Kibera Law Courts on Monday, July 21, 2025, through a miscellaneous application, following his arrest on July 18, 2025, for the murder of Edward Maingi Ndegwa.

On Thursday, July 24, 2025, Kalombotole appeared again at the Kibera Law Courts. Magistrate Daisy Mutai ordered his detention for an additional 10 days at Mbagathi Hospital under tight security, citing his unstable health condition (type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, and recurrent seizures) and the need to confirm his identity, as he lacks identification documents and known relatives.
Kalombotole later appeared before the High Court in Nairobi on Tuesday July 29, 2025, before Justice Diana Kavedza. He was charged with the murders of Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni and Edward Maingi Ndegwa.
