The National Youth Service (NYS) has issued a cautionary directive to all its graduates over an individual who has been flagged by the service for guising as a senior official in one of Kenya’s Companies.
NYS in a statement on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, unmasked the individual who is said to have been guising as the head of Mechanical Engineering Department at Davis and Shirtliff.
“We would like to inform our esteemed Graduates about a fraudulent individual who pretends to be the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Davis and Shirtliff,” read part of the statement.
According to NYS the said individual operates under the aliases Engineer Derick Kiamathi and sometimes Eng James Kimanzi.
The youth service said that the suspected fraudster contacts graduates using +254 735 272556, urging them to report to work on behalf of Davis and Shirtliff.

According to NYS, Davis and Shirtliff management clarified that it only recruits through their official online employment Portal.
Following the verification, the youth service cautioned its graduates to avoid falling prey to the fraudster, and to exercise caution when dealing with such individuals.
“Therefore, the Employment Liaison office cautions all our Graduates to exercise caution when interacting with such deceitful individuals,” said NYS.
The youth service further directed any of its graduates who have fallen victim to the scam to report to the authorities and contact them at smwemployment.liaison@nys.go.ke.
NYS highlighted that all employer requests are handled through the office of the Commandant General while advising its graduates to stay alert to avoid being deceived by scammers.

The caution by the youth service aims at ensuring thousands of graduates who undergo paramilitary and technical training of the highest standards do not fall prey to fraudsters.
National Youth Service Recruitments
Annually, about 30,000 youth are recruited and trained in various skills (paramilitary, engineering, fashion and design, business management, catering, agriculture, secretarial, plant operation, construction, driving).
They are also prepared for other national matters such as service in the armed forces, national reconstruction and disaster response.
In November 2023, President William Ruto directed that all trainees from the youth service be given priority during the countrywide military and police recruitments.
President Ruto directed that 80% of new recruits to the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) to be drawn from the service.
According to the Head of State, this would also apply for new recruits to the Kenya Forestry Services (KFS) and the Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS).
“To consolidate this proposition, we have directed that 80% of future recruits to all our national security services will be from among the well-trained, talented and committed young men and women who have undergone training at NYS,” said Ruto.
Also, the youth service lowered the entry grade from D (plain) to D- (minus) to accommodate more Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) students seeking to acquire technical skills.
NYS Director General James Kipsiele Tembur on Thursday, February 29. made the announcement while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities.
Tembur said that the move would enable youths from disadvantaged communities be able to have an opportunity to join NYS as well.
