The ongoing transformation of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega is already creating new opportunities for athletes, football players, coaches, and traders as Western Kenya benefits from increased infrastructure investment.
The stadium upgrade is expected to strengthen sports development in the region, support businesses, and create opportunities for residents once the facility is completed.
The investment is part of a wider infrastructure development focus across Western Kenya, with projects including roads, markets, electricity connections, and other public facilities.
Improved roads are also expected to make it easier for residents to access markets, schools, health facilities and commercial centres while strengthening trade in counties such as Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia.
Bukhungu Stadium Upgrade Creates New Opportunities
Luke, a Kakamega resident who has been following the ongoing works, said construction at Bukhungu Stadium was already giving residents hope, with workers on site and the project taking shape.
He said completing the facility to the required standards would enable Kakamega to host major sporting events and create new opportunities for residents.

According to Luke, the stadium will contribute to the local economy and create jobs, particularly for young people, while supporting Kakamega’s growth.
The facility previously faced challenges including limited seating, inadequate facilities for players and officials, and insufficient protection for spectators from the sun.
The ongoing works are expected to address some of these shortcomings and provide a better environment for athletes, players and fans.

Coaches Welcome Improved Sports Facilities
On his part, Football coach Gilbert said investment in sporting infrastructure was important for rebuilding football talent in Western Kenya.
He recalled that Mumias once had one of the best football surfaces in the region, but the facility later deteriorated, forcing players to use open grounds.
Gilbert said the lack of properly enclosed and maintained facilities created safety concerns for fans and made it difficult for scouts to identify and develop young talent.
Athletics coach Frank Omondi, a Kenya Prisons officer, said Bukhungu Stadium had undergone significant changes since 2015, when the facility had trees, potholes and lacked the infrastructure of a modern sporting venue.
He said the ongoing improvements had provided better facilities for athletics training, football and other sporting activities, allowing athletes to train for longer periods.
The coaches said the investment had boosted pride in Western Kenya and could help position Bukhungu Stadium as an important sporting and economic centre.
Better seating, enclosed grounds, and improved infrastructure will also make it easier for fans to attend matches while creating opportunities for traders and businesses around the stadium.

Athletes Benefit From Better Training Conditions
Commenting on the development, Kakamega athlete Felisters Mukhule said the ongoing construction was improving conditions for athletes and football players.
She said she was encouraged by the progress at the facility and noted that teams from other counties were already visiting Kakamega and appreciating the stadium.
Felisters said completing the project could attract more athletes and teams from across the country for training and competitions.
According to Mukhule, athletes previously faced difficult conditions, including potholes, uneven surfaces, and mud whenever it rained.
The poor condition of the field increased the risk of falls and injuries and made it difficult for runners to train and compete effectively.
As the improved facilities take shape, athletes can look forward to a safer, more reliable training environment.
Stadium Expected to Boost Local Businesses
Duncan Lando, another Kakamega resident, said the ongoing work was already helping athletes train in better conditions.
He said improvements to the running track and drainage had made it easier for athletes to train, particularly during rainy weather when the field previously became muddy.
Lando also said the improved football pitch gave players a better surface and motivated them to train.
He expects the completed stadium to create more business opportunities for residents, particularly traders selling food and other goods to visitors attending sporting events.
Duncan now looks forward to the timely completion of the stadium to ultimately meet international standards and attract visitors from outside Kenya.
Such an outcome, he said, would help put Kakamega on the international sporting map while allowing local businesses to benefit from increased activity around the facility.
