The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Odinga, has sparked questions about his absence from the party’s leaders’ retreat in Mombasa, with the public asking about his whereabouts and his health.
This ODM retreat, held on 4 May 2026, brought together party leaders, Members of Parliament, the National Executive Committee (NEC), and other stakeholders to deliberate on party direction, unity, and organizational strategy ahead of future political activities.
Oburu Odinga did not attend the meeting in person but issued a message to delegates stating that he was unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances.
“First, allow me to sincerely apologize for my absence from this special occasion. I had fully planned to attend this retreat, but due to unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances, I have been unable to do so,” he stated.
He said he would follow the proceedings and encouraged members to engage in constructive discussions.
A concerned Kenyan raised questions in response to the statement issued by ODM party leader Oburu Odinga.
“Where is the party leader, Oburu? This is the third ODM function he is missing. Is he still sick?” X user @jasholangu asked.
Oburu Odinga Earlier Sends Strong Message on Future of ODM Party
In a separate statement issued prior to the meeting, on Sunday, May 4, the ODM Party leader issued a statement on the future of the party, urging unity and cohesion within its leadership.

“As we take this day to rest and reflect with our families and communities, I want to share a message that has been heavy on my heart regarding the future of our great nation and Our party ODM,” Oburu said.
From his message, Oburu Odinga reflected on the importance of unity within the party and emphasized that diversity remains a key strength when members work together. He noted that disagreement on policy should not lead to disregard for shared purpose and humanity.
He called on party leaders to rise above personal interests and focus on building unity of purpose. According to him, leadership decisions should prioritize the needs of the people and the long-term stability of the party.
Oburu stated that the primary goal should be a stable, prosperous, and cohesive political party. He stressed the need for cooperation and collective responsibility among leaders.
He further urged colleagues in leadership to prioritize the common good over individual gain, saying this would help ensure peace and mutual respect within the party structure. He concluded by encouraging the building of bridges rather than divisions, reinforcing the need for reconciliation and teamwork within the party.
