World 200m Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo warmed hearts after rescuing motorists trapped in floodwaters in his home country of Botswana.
World Athletics recognized Tebogo after several videos and photos surfaced on social media showing the renowned sprinter using a truck to tow partially submerged vehicles away from danger.
The incident unfolded amid severe flooding in the country caused by torrential rains.
Botswana Youth reported that the rescue took place near the BTV/Block 3 traffic lights in the country’s capital, Gaborone.
Heavy rains in Botswana have led to widespread disruptions causing damage to residential and infrastructural properties and rendering several bridges impassable.
Tebogo recognized worldwide
World Atheltics recognized Tebogo as a hero of the nation on and off the track.
“Hero of the nation on and off the track. Olympic 200m champ Letsile Tebogo rescued stranded motorists whose cars were submerged due to the severe floodings Botswana is currently facing,” said World Athletics.

The 200m Olympic champion, Letsile Tebogo, is now being hailed as a hero after his act.
In several videos and photos circulating online, the renowned sprinter can be seen using a truck to tow partially submerged vehicles away from danger.
Reacting to the video, users from across the world have showered the athlete with praises.
In a comment on, American Noah Lyles, a rival sprinter dropped strong six-word message describing him as a “true man of the people”.
“A true man of the people (with emojis),” Noah Lyles reacted.
Another X user named Lorrenzo Diego stated, “Well done Lestile Tebogo. The weather has been very bad in Both Botswana and South Africa since last week Thursday I hope everyone is safe.”
Who is Letsile Tebogo?
Letsile Tebogo is a sprinter from Botswana born on June 7, 2003. He won the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 200 metres event, with his win earning Botswana the first-ever Olympic gold medal.
He also won the silver medal at the 2023 World Championships in the 100 m and a bronze medal in the 200 m that came five days later.

In addition, Tebogo won in the 100 metres and placed second in the 200 metres at both the 2021 and 2022 World Athletics Under-20 Championships.
In 2021, he became the first Botswana athlete to claim the 100m title at any World Championships level. He is the 200m 2022 African champion, a feat that saw him become the youngest winner of this title in competition history.
He broke the 300m world best, running a time of 30.69 seconds on February 17, 2024, at altitude in Pretoria, South Africa.
Tebogo has held the world U20 record in the 100m since April 2022. He was the first man from Botswana to break the 10-second barrier
