Residents of estates along Outer-Ring Road and Nyayo estate will experience water shortage due to a scheduled interruption of part of their supply.
The supply cut of is a result of a disconnection exercise that has seen the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) cut off a 4-inch pipeline that was supplying water to the areas.

In a statement, the company indicated that the pipeline was located near the Kariobangi- Korogocho underpass.
Further, Nairobi Water explained that the pipe was illegally connected to its main water supply, going against stipulated rules and regulations.

In addition, the company asked residents of all Nairobi Estates to report illegal connections, meter tampering, water leaks and sewer bursts to ensure immediate action.
“Today, NCWSC Informal Settlement Region conducted a disconnection exercise of a 4-inch pipeline illegally connected to our main water distribution pipeline (DN 900) along Outer Ring Road, near Kariobangi- Korogocho underpass,” announced Nairobi Water.

“This water supply line serves areas along Outer Ring Road all the way to Nyayo Estate. We urge customers to report illegal connections, meter tampering, water leaks and sewer bursts.”

Nairobi Water Issues Warning Over Illegal Connections
The Nairobi water company has been conducting a crackdown on illegal water connections across Nairobi estates and other areas within Kiambu Country.
The company noted that the exercise was being done in collaboration with the Administration Police Unit.
This follows an announcement on February 28 of concerns of rapidly growing illegal connections. Ministry of Water and Sanitation Principal Secretary (PS) Paul Kiprono said that the ministry was losing about Ksh10 billion as a result of the illegal connections.
“The government has invested close to Sh1 trillion in water infrastructure, but we are losing close to Sh10 billion on non-revenue water,” he said.

Penalties for Illegal Connections
According to the Water Act 2016, illegal water connection for commercial, industrial or construction sites attracts a fine of Ksh100,000 plus the estimated consumption during the entire period of the illegality.
The offence can also attract a jail term of two years or both (payment of the fine plus jail term).
Also, the act indicates that domestic users who engage in illegal water connections will be fined Ksh30,000 plus the estimated consumption during the entire period of the illegality.
