Kenyans are mourning the death of Mzee Patrick Wangamati, a former nominated Member of Parliament for party affairs in Bungoma County.
In a statement on May 18, Former Bungoma County Governor Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati announced the death of his father, Mzee Patrick Wangamati, who passed away at 4:00 am while receiving treatment.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Mzee Patrick Wangamati, who rested this morning at 4:00 am,” the statement read in part.
Wycliffe Wangamati, in his statement, said the Former MP died at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Bungoma after a period of illness.
Additionally, he said that Patrick Wangamati has been receiving treatment at several hospitals, including Nairobi Hospital and Bungoma West Hospital, in the recent times.
On behalf of the family, the former governor requested prayers, comfort, and support as they come to terms with the loss, stating that funeral and burial arrangements will be communicated at a later date.
“As we come to terms with this great loss, we humbly ask for prayers, comfort, and support through this difficult period. Further details regarding funeral and burial arrangements will be communicated later. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he stated.
Former Bungoma MP Mzee Patrick Wangamati Mourned
In a statement on May 18, the Principal Secretary for Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana, mourned the death of Mzee Patrick Wangamati.
He described Mzee Wangamati as a respected elder and leader who dedicated his life to public service and community development.

“I join the people of Bungoma in mourning the loss of Mzee Patrick Wangamati, a respected former Member of Parliament and the father to former Bungoma County Governor, H.E. Wycliffe Wangamati,” he mourned.
In his statement, he noted that the late leaves behind a legacy of leadership, wisdom, and commitment that will be remembered by many who interacted with him.
Patrick Wangamati Profile
Patrick Wangamati’s political career began in local government during the late 1980s when he served as Mayor of Webuye under the one-party political system in Kenya.
By the early 1990s, he had served as Chairman of Webuye County Council and was actively involved in opposition politics during the transition to multi-party democracy.
In 1992, he led the February 18 Movement, an anti–single-party campaign that resulted in his exile to Uganda after clashing with the then-regime.

He later returned to Kenya following the reintroduction of multi-party politics and re-engaged in community and political leadership activities.
During the post-exile period, he served in national politics as a nominated Member of Parliament on a Ford Kenya–linked ticket.
In the 2010, Wangamati was active in Ford Kenya party structures and the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), contributing to Luhya regional political mobilization and leadership.
Patrick Wangamati served as a nominated Member of Parliament in the 11th Parliament of Kenya from 28 March 2013 to 8 August 2017.
He was appointed under the party nomination system on a Ford Kenya ticket and did not represent a specific constituency.
His tenure covered the full 2013–2017 parliamentary term in the National Assembly.
After the end of that term, he did not return to Parliament.
