Police arrested a 42-year-old man found trafficking 146kg of bhang along the Kisii-Migori highway on Sunday, July 7.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the drug was recovered after a hot pursuit by law enforcers in Kisii who had gotten wind of his illicit trade.
Police mounted a roadblock at the Iyabe Bomokora area and intercepted a Toyota Land Cruiser with two occupants.
However, the driver sped off as the officers closed in for a search prompting a hot chase but not for long as the Prado got stuck in a ditch.

“Even so, the driver managed to scamper into nearby thickets and holed up. Not so lucky though for Collins Otieno, who was cornered and helped to a police car alongside six sacks of bhang that were found stashed in their vehicle,” DCI said.
The suspect was escorted to Suneka Police Station for further processing, while the seized narcotics and the motor vehicle were detained at Kisii Central Police Station as exhibits.
A reflective motor vehicle was also found in a carrier bag and pursuit for the escapee is ongoing.
However, the DCI stated that a manhunt for the escapee is ongoing.

Bhang and Alcohol Addiction
This comes as the government intensifies efforts to curb illicit brews and drug abuse.
Similarly, it follows last month’s apprehension of another suspect in Kilindini during an early morning raid by detectives.
In a statement on June 14, officers narrated how a team of Anti-Narcotics officers trailed the suspect who was allegedly waiting for a delivery agent.
“The hunt was on at 1am as a team of Anti-Narcotics officers from Kilindini trailed a suspect as he loitered at the Likoni matatu station, impatiently waiting for a delivery sent from Tanga in Tanzania. As the clock struck 6am, Collins Omondi seized the parcel and discreetly stowed it in his Subaru Treza Reg. No. KDE 948E,” the statement read.

DCI revealed the meticulous steps taken before capturing the unsuspecting offender, including identifying the vehicle he used to transport the drugs.
“As the clock struck 6am, Collins Omondi seized the parcel and discretely stowed it in his Subaru Treza Reg. No. KDE 948E,” DCI stated, highlighting the early morning operation.
According to DCI, the officers, who had been closely monitoring Omondi’s every move, trailed him to Fazuka Apartment Complex in Utange Solian.
There, they swiftly arrested the unsuspecting smuggler, effectively dismantling a significant part of the drug trafficking operation.
