Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi mourned the death of renowned Odia film director and actor, Sadhu Meher.
The 84-year-old actor died at his Mumbai residence on Friday, 2,2024.
According to Modi, Sadhu’s death was a great loss to the Indian filming industry.
“The demise of Shri Sadhu Meher Ji is a profound loss for the world of films and our cultural heritage,” shared minister Modi.
He emphasized Sadhu’s dedication and sympathizing with his family at large.
“A stalwart in both Hindi and Odia cinema, his cinematic performances and dedication were exemplary.
My thoughts are with his family, colleagues, and many fans mourning this irreplaceable loss. In his memory, we cherish the rich artistic heritage he leaves behind. Om Shanti,” added the prime minister.
Sadhu Personal Life
Born on January 1, 1940, in Boudh district, Meher played a pivotal role in the Indian new wave of cinema movement during the 1970s.
An alumnus of the Film and Television Institute India in Pune, he initially started his career as an actor and later emerged as a prominent filmmaker in both Hindi and Odia film industries.
In the Hindi film industry, Meher made his debut in Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome in 1969 portraying the character of a junior railway official.
Reflecting on his early success, the Indian Prime Minister also acknowledged the actor’s award in his filming journey.
“The movie won national awards for best film, best director, and best actor a year later,” shared Modi.

Sadhu’s Award in The Filming Industry
Notably, in 1974, Meher received the National Award for Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Shyam Benegal’s Ankur (The Seedling).
His collaboration with Benegal continued with acclaimed films like Nishant (1975) and Manthan (1976).
The actor also left his mark in various other films, including Safed Haathi, Inkaar, Debshishu, Gharaonda, Mrigayaa, Uttoran, Forgotten Showers, Charandas Chor, Charachar, Kasturi, and more.
Beyond Hindi cinema, Sadhu Meher made significant contributions to the Odia film industry, acting in nearly 38 films and directing five, including the children’s film Babula (1985).
His diverse and impactful career has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, and his legacy will be remembered with admiration and respect.
