Public Service Board Clashes with Mwangaza Over Hiring

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is facing fresh opposition from the County Public Service Board over the recruitment of county staff.

The Board has opposed Mwangaza’s decision to stop recruitment exercises in key government departments.

In a statement on January 9, Mwangaza said the move was prompted by challenges facing the process.

“After extensive consultations, we have made the regrettable decision to suspend the ongoing recruitment process that was initiated by the Meru County Public Service Board due to a myriad of challenges that are currently affecting it. We will endeavour to resolve them,” Mwangaza said.

However, the Board’s CEO, Virginia Miriti, alleged that certain officers were involved in undermining the recruitment system.

Miriti asked residents to ignore reports that the process had been stopped.

ECDE Teachers to Submit Physical Applications

Additionally, she advised Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) teachers to continue their applications through hand delivery as guided in the advert as the Board works to restore the system.

She said the budget allocated Ksh90 million to recruit ECDE teachers approved by the governor, county assembly and controller of budget.

“The board is concerned that some officers were used to maliciously interfere with the recruitment system leading to the system failure,” he said.

“We inform the general public to ignore the purported cancellation of the advert as the board is working to restore the system in due course.”

Meru County Needs More Staff

Further, she informed the public that the advert was necessitated by the dire need in the critical departments.

For example, he highlighted that the doctor-patient ratio should be 1:1000 but in Meru, it is 1:11,761.

She said there is a need for skilled labour across all departments, but the board chose the key ones.

Miriti said the need came from the departments through the committees and was forwarded to the county human resource committees.

Mwangaza Interference with the Board Operation

Besides, she accused the governor and her team of interfering with the operations of the board contrary to the Constitution.

“She also wrote a letter stopping this process which is interference with a constitutional mandate which we have created as an independent office free from any malice and interference. Whatever they are doing now is purely interference with the board’s operation,” she said.

“The information we have is that they don’t want this board to recruit and at the end of the day it is the people who end up suffering.”
