Images emerged on the morning of September 28 after Russia launched a massive overnight drone and missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, leaving multiple people dead and residential neighborhoods in ruins.
Drones and missiles rained down on the city and surrounding regions overnight, sending residents scrambling to shelters as anti-aircraft fire lit up the skies.
By Sunday morning, horrifying images of burning buildings and destroyed homes emerged, with officials confirming multiple deaths and dozens injured.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS) said residential buildings and civil infrastructure were damaged across several districts of Kyiv, including Solomyansky, Svyatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, and Dniprovskyi.
In the Solomyansky district, firefighters pulled the body of a 12-year-old girl from the rubble of a five-story apartment building.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed at least four people were killed and eight others wounded in the capital.
“Once again, residential buildings and infrastructure are being hit. Once again, it is a war against civilians,” Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s presidential office, said.
Beyond Kyiv, Russian strikes hit several regions overnight. In Zaporizhzhia, local officials reported at least 16 people injured, including three children.
“This was a massive assault,” said regional governor Yuriy Malashko, urging civilians to remain in shelters.
Ukraine’s foreign minister said hundreds of drones and missiles had been launched across the country in the latest wave. Russia has not commented on the strikes.
The attacks triggered international alarm. Poland closed its airspace over the southeastern cities of Lublin and Rzeszów overnight due to what authorities called “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
The Polish armed forces said jets were scrambled alongside NATO aircraft in response to Russia’s long-range aviation operating near its borders. “These actions are preventive,” Poland’s military said on X.
Russia- Ukraine War
The escalation came just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Russia would not stop with Ukraine.
“Putin will not wait to finish his war in Ukraine. He will open up some other direction. Nobody knows where. He wants that,” Zelensky said.
He argued that Moscow was testing European air defenses with recent incursions across NATO countries.

Russia has also been accused of drone and aircraft incursions into the airspace of Denmark and Estonia, prompting NATO to strengthen its eastern flank.
Denmark described the incidents as the work of a “professional actor,” while Estonia directly accused Moscow of airspace violations.
Western leaders condemned the strikes. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called them “barbaric and deliberate,” saying they were aimed at breaking Ukraine’s spirit. “These attacks will only strengthen NATO’s resolve,” he said.
At the United Nations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov insisted Moscow had no intention of attacking NATO or EU member states but warned of a “decisive response” to any aggression directed at Russia.
