Just after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga broke the silence on the death of Albert Ojwang in a statement on June 10, 2025, ODM politicians dumped President William Ruto’s side by condemning the atrocity.
Raila said he was deeply horrified by reports of the young Kenyan, Albert Ojwang, who was picked from Homa Bay and driven to his death in police cells in Nairobi, over an alleged offensive social media post about a senior police officer.

ODM representatives speak on Ojwang’s death
Siaya Senator Oginga Oburu warned that failing to fully address Albert Ojwang’s case would diminish public trust
“If we don’t tackle this case to the end, Kenyans will not believe us. How am I going to tell Homa Bay people that we are a broad-based government without explaining to them that their son was picked, then put in some police cell?” He questioned.
“There are many police cells on the way from Oyugis,” he added.
Senator Godfrey Osotsi’s demands

“We want to see action from the UDA government. Why is the Deputy IG Eliud Kanja still in office? Why are you terminating the services of junior officers while their bosses were enjoying lunch and breakfast when Albert Ojwang’s body is decaying in the morgue?” Osotsi said.
Millie Odhiambo, the Suba North MP, asked the government to consider employing external investigators to investigate the death of Albert Ojwang.
She said that in Kenya, people are arrested, and when the anger dies down, the case disappears.
“If IPOA is not in a position to, occasionally, the government has employed external investigators to investigate cases, and for us to have confidence, the government should consider.”

All these came after a postmortem had established the cause of death for digital activist Albert Ojwang, who died while being detained at the Nairobi Central police station on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
Government pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia said there were serious injuries to the head, features of neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries spread across the body, including the head, neck, upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs.
He explained that the injuries were externally inflicted and pointed toward assault.
“The cause of death is very simple, as I have mentioned, head injury, neck compression, and other injuries spread all over the body that are pointing towards assault,” Midia said.

Dr. Midia dismissed reports that Ojwang could have hit his head on the wall. He said the bleeding on the head was partial and inconsistent with that of a person who could have hit his head on a blunt object, which is normally frontal.
Additionally, Midia said there were signs of struggle without giving many details.
The postmortem started at 8:30 am on Tuesday, June 10, at City Mortuary. The autopsy was conducted by government pathologist Dr. Bernard Midia and Njoroge Richard. Ojwang’s family was represented by Dr. Mutuma and Dr. Peter Ndegwa.
