A report by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has surfaced indicating that Mokwa, a flour brand launched by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, was unsafe for consumption.
The report seen by The Kenya Times, dated September 13, indicated that samples collected of the flour did not comply with the requirements of the bureau after retesting.
Further, KEBS Lake Region manager Benard Sindani who signed the report, indicated that the test results revealed that Mokwa (translated into ‘Our Flour’), affected the health, and safety of the consumers.
The samples collected were recorded to have high aflatoxin content of 19.46 while the required maximum content in 10.
“Please find enclosed copies of the Test report for samples drawn from your firm on 28th August 2023 which were tested against.
“The samples failed to comply with the requirements of the Standard as indicated in the Test Certificate. These are major noncompliance affecting performance of the product, health, and safety of the consumer,” the report read in part.

Raila Launched Mokwa Flour
Notably, Azimio leader Raila Odinga launched the milling of Mokwa in September 2022, accompanied by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Wanga and Raila shared photos and videos of the launch on their social platforms celebrating the milestone for the Nyanza region.
Moreover, Wanga explained at the time that the aim of the mill was to ensure that farmers in the region were not exploited by middlemen.
“We have officially kicked off the maize buying mop up initiative for our Kigoto Maize milling Plant’s Mokwa.
“My administration stands firmly beside our hardworking farmers, shielding them from exploitative middlemen,” she stated in October before the launch.
Additionally, the milling is done at the Kigoto maize mill plant in Kigoto village in Suba South.

KEBS Instructions to Kigoto Maize Millers
Subsequently, the bureau ordered the miller to immediately recall the affected batch from the market.
Additionally, the bureau ordered Kigoto maize mill to comply with the requirements of the applicable standards. KEBS noted that it was also considering taking legal action.
“You shall take correction and corrective action immediately. You shall recall the affected batch from the market immediately.
“Kenya Bureau of Standards is considering taking legal action against your firm for contravening the Standards Act, Cap 496. Laws of Kenya,” added the report.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga is yet to comment on the matter.
