Rev. Sammy Wainaina of The Provost of All Saints Cathedral, called out the church for hosting politicians instead of forbidding them from using pulpits to campaign.
While speaking to his church members on Sunday, June 3, the reverend stated that, it is not right for the church to support legislators who have been linked to cases of corruption. According to him, such actions by church leaders ultimately undermines their integrity.
At the same time, Rev. Sammy Wainaina pointed out that churches are actively in support of political proposals even though they should avoid getting involved in politics, especially while electioneering is still rampant.
“Unfortunately the church has become captive of our politicians so that they come here and they demand to speak. But you Christians want to be entertained by our corrupt politicians. You want them do display money in the public,” he said.
“If the church is corrupt it cannot heal the nation. And so the question about the church and politics starts with me and you we shouldn’t expect a miracle from the top.” Added Rev, Wainaina.
Moreover, the Reverend criticized the manifestos by presidential aspirants saying they are unachievable.
According to him, politicians have mastered the art of deceit. Therefore, Kenyans should be wary of them by going over the promises that were made by the current government and were never fulfilled.
“What is the manifestos, can they be achieved, can we afford them, are they realistic? The dead horse is being raffled,” he lamented.
In addition, while calling upon the Judiciary, Media, Police, Civil Servants, County Governments and IEBC to be vigilant in upholding integrity, Rev. Wainaina stated that:
“The stadiums were the old dead horse ruffles, were they done? The roads that we were promised, the laptops for our children were they done. Why do you get lied at and you clap and get entertained? How sad that our politicians cheat us. I pray that this country will not just be held by politicians but by institutions that hold a country.”
Furthermore, the reverend asked the church to take lead in the fight against dishonest politicians. According to him, Kenyans should not expect any changes from the incoming government.
“And I can assure you that after August 9 there will be nothing new for the nation because a system produces one of its own. If we are a corrupt people, we’ll only have a corrupt one at the top.”
Moreover, Rev. Wainaina further added that, Kenyans should never anticipate for miracles, as long as the motivation for leadership in the country is about power and money.
