Rita Waeni’s Close Friends Give Account of Her Personal LifeĀ

Close friends of Rita Waeni, a 20-year-old student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) found brutally murdered in an Airbnb in Roysambu have revealed that she was a quiet person who always kept to herself.Ā

While giving an account of her personal life on Thursday, January 18, Rita’s friends described her as a person who loved and cared for others.Ā

Two of the close friends who spoke to a local Tv station were her classmates, while one of them noted that she was her childhood friend.

“I heard the news of her passing on Monday night while I was already asleep. I could not believe that she was the one murdered,” she stated.

Rita Waeni’s Dreams, Personality and School LifeĀ

Her friend, Patience Wavinya, recounted her shock when she received the news of her death, adding that Waeni had dreams of completing her education and getting a good job after school.Ā

“The last time we met, we were within the school premises. I was in a hurry because I was headed to class, so we only spoke briefly and parted ways,” she stated.Ā

Additionally, Wavinya said that Waeni was not a secretive person despite keeping to herself.Ā

“We used to share stories. She would talk to me about difficult situations in her life and we would find solutions together. She never told me about a man who she was seeing,” she added.Ā

“She was very soft spoken, and her circle was so small, there is no way her business would have been known by many like this. She would come to my room to do my hair because she knew a bit of hairdressing,” Mutia added.

Family on the Last Moments of the JKUAT Student

Earlier on January 17, Rita Waeni’s family revealed that she left her auntā€™s home in Syokimau to meet a friend on the fateful day.

Further, they noted that the killer demanded for a Ksh500,000 ransom before they received the news of her death.Ā

The unknown perpetrators, as explained, had been in touch with Waeniā€™s family and demanded the money with an ultimatum of 24 hours on the day she was killed as a condition for her release.Ā

ā€œWe believe she was lured by her killer, who also tried to extort money from her family, even after killing her,ā€ the family said in a statement.

As investigations continue, police officers are already holding four suspects in their custody.

Nonetheless, the news of Waeni’s death and other recently reported cases of murder have sparked a lot of conversation on insecurity and femicide.
