Kelvin Kiarie Wins Gold Abroad
In-line skater Kevin Kiarie, a 26-year-old structural engineer with a Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from the Technical University of Kenya, arrived in Cairo, Egypt, ahead of the 2026 African Skating Championship.
He was scheduled to compete in three categories during the championship held over three days, from Friday to Sunday.
The event brought together athletes from across the continent for various skating disciplines.
Kiarie’s participation was part of his continued involvement in international skating competitions, where he has previously earned recognition as an award-winning athlete.

Earlier, during the International Skating Challenge in Cotonou, Benin, Kevin Kiarie won a gold medal in the freestyle battle category and a silver in the classic Slalom, where he competed as a representative of Kenya.
Also, in December 2025, Kevin competed at the Inline Freestyle World Championship in Singapore, placing 18th.
In the Kenya National Championships, Kevin holds the title of 2-time national skating champion in the freestyle skating category.
Following the competition, President William Ruto confirmed Kiarie’s success on May 3, announcing that he had won a gold medal at the African Skating Championship in Cairo.
His achievements came despite logistics challenges after it emerged that he self-funded his trip for the competition in Benin. Kenyans on social media called out the Department of Sports for having failed to facilitate Kevin’s trip to the country despite his proven talent.
In a statement, Kiarie explained how he boarded a matatu to get to the airport since he could not afford an Uber trip. He, however, went on to win gold and silver in the competition held in Cotonou.
