President William Ruto has pledged KSh100 million to kick-start the construction of a university on 50 acres of land donated by the Wafula Wabuge family in Likuyani, Kakamega County.
Speaking at a church service at St Mark’s Catholic Church in Matunda on October 11, Ruto said the government would add funds to the money already set aside for the project.
The President said he would send his Principal Secretary, Mama Inyangala, to the area the following week as plans for the construction begin.
“The Wafula Wabuge family gave us 50 acres of land and said that, if possible, we should build a university there. I am sending my PS, Mama iNyangala, who will be coming next week. We had set aside some money, and I will top it up to reach KSh100 million to kick-start the construction of the university,” he said.
Ruto said the university would be built on the donated land in honour of the elderly man and his family who gave it.
He added that the institution would benefit children in the area and across Kenya.

Ruto Announces Date for Kakamega Referral Hospital Level Six Upgrade
The president said the government would gazette Kakamega Referral Hospital as a Level Six facility in November, paving the way for the national government to provide annual funding for its operations.
“We will gazette it next month and make Kakamega Referral Hospital a Level Six facility. From then on, the national government will be sending money every year to run the hospital.”
The President said he had secured KSh1 billion to complete the hospital after construction stalled, adding that he had reached an agreement with the Kakamega governor to upgrade the facility from Level Five to Level Six.

Under the proposed arrangement, the national government would fund the hospital’s operations, allowing Kakamega County to redirect money currently allocated to the facility to other development projects.
Ruto urged Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) to allocate the funds to other county priorities once the national government begins financing the hospital.
“That means the county funds that you, the MCAs, currently allocate to Kakamega Referral Hospital will be used for other purposes. You will bring those funds elsewhere. Leave that hospital to me; I will provide government money to run it.”
