Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja issued a clarification on the waiver on land rates arrears for landlords running up to December 2023.
In a statement on Tuesday, December 5, the Nairobi governor noted that the waiver was on both the penalties and interests for those who would manage to pay before December 31, 2023.
“Rate payers, remember the 2023 Land Rates arrears Waiver is on both penalties and interest,” he noted.
“You should only pay your (Principal arrears + Current Land Rates) before Dec 31st,” he added.
Additionally, he noted the landlord did not need to adjust payments as there were invoices in their portal where they would make the adjustments.

On Monday, November 20, 2023, Sakaja announced a 30-day penalty waiver for landlords in Nairobi to settle outstanding rates and boost county revenue.
Chairing a roundtable meeting with Sub County Administrators, County Chief Officers from Finance, Mobility, Boroughs and Administration, Smart Nairobi, Environment and Works Sectors, the Governor commended the team for their hard work despite the prevailing circumstances and promised to address their grievances, including training, running imprest, motor vehicle fuel, to ensure efficient service delivery.
“Irrespective of Sector, the Sub County Administrators are in charge of what happens in their respective areas of jurisdiction, and it is necessary that every Sub County Sector head reports to the Sub County Administrators.

The Governor pledged to initiate the construction and rehabilitation of grassroots offices within the next year to ensure all Sub County employees have a place to carry out their duties.
Notably, at the beginning of the year, the Nairobi County Government had issued a notice that gave the waiver that was to lapse in April before Sakaja extended it to December.
