Governor Johnson Sakaja, through the Nairobi City County Government, has announced plans to prepare a new development plan for the Nairobi River Corridor, with the process set to begin on September 25, 2026.
Gazette Notice published on September 25 and signed by Patrick Mbogo, CECM for Built Environment and Urban Planning, states that the Nairobi River Corridor Special Planning Area Local Physical and Land Use Development Plan will be prepared under Section 47 of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019.
“PURSUANT to the provisions of Section 47 of the Physical and Land Use Planning Act, 2019, notice is given that the Nairobi City County intends to commence preparation of the above Plan on the 25th September 2026,” the notice stated.
Nairobi River Corridor Plan Targets River Regeneration and Flood Risks
According to the notice, the proposed plan will provide a framework for river regeneration and flood hazard mitigation within the Nairobi River corridor.
It will also guide riparian land use and redevelopment, including infrastructure development in the area.
Construction of social and affordable housing is also included in the proposed development plan.
This Nairobi River framework will cover associated social and physical infrastructure required alongside the housing developments.

“The Plan will provide a framework for river regeneration, flood hazard mitigation, riparian land use and redevelopment including infrastructure development and construction of social and affordable housing and associated social and physical infrastructure.”
The notice also states that members of the public and other interested parties have 21 days to submit comments on the proposed plan.

Sakaja Announces Waiver on Minor Building Repairs for Property Owners
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has waived application and approval requirements for minor building repairs ahead of the anticipated El Niño rains.
In a statement on September 23, Sakaja said that the waiver will allow Nairobi residents to install gutters and carry out minor repairs to their homes and compounds without obtaining the usual approvals.

Sakaja said the measure will remain in place until the onset of the rains as the county prepares for the expected wet weather.
The move is intended to allow residents to make quick repairs and improve drainage around their homes ahead of the rainy season.
“As Nairobi prepares for the anticipated El Niño rains, I have waived the application and approval processes for minor building repairs until the onset of the rains,” read part of the statement. This will allow Nairobians to install gutters and make minor repairs to their homes and compounds without the usual approvals.”
